Had an interesting chat in the pub earlier - who is the best of all time. Hard to look past Madonna.

Easy to snark at, and she should've stopped a decade ago, yet she remains one of the most talented and influential pop stars of all time.

Before you type "she can't sing", she absolutely can. She is a phenomenal singer. And she has written and performed some of the most iconic pop songs of all time.

"Take a Bow" in particular is an absolute masterpiece, and if it weren't Madonna (who wrote and sang it - definitively) it would be considered one of the best songs ever produced.

She has certainly been going for a long time so she must be doing something right. Good pop start who can certainly put on a show.

I quite liked the Ray of Light stuff she did with Willam Orbit and the 80's stuff when I was a kid

Overall a bit Meh for my tastes.

Would never make it into the top 10 female singers of all time based on vocal talents.

Even in her own time Cyndi Lauper was a far better singer.

Singers like Linda Ronstadt and Ann Wilson are in a different league to Madonna.

There are a lot more factors to take into account than purely vocal talents.

I think that many 'singers' have proven that vocal talents do not make a huge difference in terms of success.

She has sold a lot of records for a lot of years so must score highly in some of those other areas.

The greatest female voice? No.

The greatest female singing entertainer? Quite possibly.

Madonna always had tremendous charisma and stage presence with the elaborate shows.

Her longevity was due to continually innovating and reinventing herself from album to album to stay fresh.

She could do sentimental (Live to Tell, This Used To Be My Playground) just as well as raunch. And she could act.

The voice of the 80s decade when she declared 'cause we are living in a material world and I am a material girl'.

Gordon Gekko would have been proud.

I'd put Madonna in the Gwen Stefani, Kylie Minogue like group of singers.

Entertainers but not all time great singers, potentially put more effort into the choreography than the singing at times which is why Madonna has lip synched in the past.

True greats don't lip synch.

That's why I put the likes of Ann Wilson above them.

Incredible voice, sold records and most importantly capable of an amazing live performance.

Yeah I agree, really I am more interested in song writers than performers as such.

Beth Orton is the one that springs to mind for me.

Not really the same thing though.

she can't sing

A popular myth amongst the metropolitan, music elite.

In fact, a conspiracy theory on par with the crazy moon landing one.

The first conspiracy theory can be disproved by attending one of her gigs, the second one by peering at the moon with a high powered telescope and seeing bits and pieces left by the Americans.

What she does she does well, I can watch some of her videos but she doesn’t get airtime on my music systems.

She wouldn’t make my personal top 20 female singers though.

A female bad girl version of Cliff Richard for me

Madonna has arguably been the greatest at plugging into popular culture and catching the right mood at the right time, often aligning herself with key writers and producers giving her reinvention after reinvention. I doubt anyone else has done more with their talent for so long.
