Why?

It was thirteen days between Holly and Jessica going missing and Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr being arrested.

True, but they were taken somewhere on the street with no cctv...not out of a hotel complex where somebody REALLY should have seen something!!!!

Well for a start our police would actually ask the public to help them, and they wouldn't take over three days to alert the airports in the country.

As far as I can remember there was huge public 'help' with the case of Holly and Jessica and the authorities notified, still took thirteen days for them to arrest anyone.

I don't think it's right to say this case would have been solved had it been in England. If so, why are they are many missing children listed on the link posted above. Why haven't their cases been solved?

be fair her picture is allow over the papers i'm sure most people know what she looks like. even though they haven't done a big appeal doesn't mean the public aren't looking or helping.
they don't realise this information to the media so there is no way to know what they are really doing

As for the missing kids here, I have no idea. The only thing I can think of is that not many are as lucky as Madeleine to have the national news dedicated to them every night for 10 days, and without that, it must become a lot harder.

...and thats the thing that fucks me off about the media!

Well if it still took 13 days with the help of the whole nation, it was obviously tricky to solve! Ok, I was wrong to say the British police would have SOLVED this by now, what I should have said is the Portugese are NOT giving themselves the best possible chance. They didn't even take her parents seriously to start with:shootself

Maybe this case with Madeleine is tricky to solve as well. I don't know, none of us know.

And I completely agree with you about the second paragraph and that's sad for all the other parents and child :(

Do you have any facts that back up your view of the investigation? I'll answer that one for you - NO. You're just repeating the received wisdom that comes from this country's ignorant press. The facts, the reality of the situation mean nothing in this country - it's just Johnny Foreigner making a mess of it. Unbelievable.

Lets have your facts then.

I have scanned this post a few times. I think this is what was meant to be said:

I don't doubt the Portugese public are doing their best, but they could surely do a lot more with a bit more information a bit quicker. I know there are laws there which prevent them releasing information, but when a little girl's life is at stake the laws are just BOLLOCKS to be honest.

i agree. but we can't change that.
it still wouldn't_necessarily mean they would find her any faster, sadly__

Well I've read the internet and newspapers every day since she went missing. With the exception of me actually flying to the algarve, how do you propose I can do any more?

Not be quite so quick to pass judgement? Just a suggestion, maybe?

You don't have to do any more, but you have some fairly strong views that the Portuguese investigation has been completely flawed and I'm fascinated to know what evidence there is for that.
I'm not sure (as dougdeep reported) that I have to come up with the facts, I'm not the one laying into the Portuguese authorities without any evidence. That's not to say mistakes might not have been made, but then again are our police really the bastions of efficiency you paint them to be?

I do know that it's estimated that 930 police officers have been involved in the search making it Portugal's largest 'man' hunt in living memory (so your average missing Portuguese girl doesn't get this attention, let's not even mention the taxpayer cost at this time).

I also know that despite widespread criticism about the police's reaction time that little would be done differently in this country. If you report your 3 year old missing, a 200-man police search is not instigated immediately, nor are border controls notified within the hour. People need to face up to it - we wouldn't have done much differently here. EXCEPT - there are some secrecy laws in Portugal which are now to be reviewed. These types of laws aren't unique to Portugal.

I also know that over 30,000 phonecalls from the Portuguese public has been generated. Hundreds of locals have been involved in the search and continue even with the Police scaling back their own search.

I know that the coverage in Portugal is just as widespread as it is here. I also know there's a backlash against the British media. Rightly or wrongly, the Portuguese media believe that criticism of the authorities for not doing their job is harsh, especially when they feel that the parents didn't do theirs.

Come to think of it - is it me or is the only person not getting the blame yet the person who took her?!
