So today's the day that Sussex need to play their best day's cricket of the season. Will they? I think we all suspect what the answer to that is but we live in hope*

Restricting the Yorkies' scoring rate and hopefully some lost overs due to rain at Leeds are crucial.
Our best chance is that they get reduced overs today and bat on tomorrow. In that case we might be able to stay up by surviving two and a bit sessions for the draw.

Not sure if this is NSC chat or well founded opinion...Even if we do stay up, does anyone trust the club to recruit properly for next season? I don't. I think we'd only go down next season instead.
I think the First Division is extremely competitive and if we do stay up then it will once again be a massive challenge to assemble a squad capable of doing better (i.e. top 5 rather than bottom 4...?).
There is not that much wrong with our batting. Our batsmen have scored more individual tons than any other county and often in entertaining fashion. This year our bowling has been very thin. Seam attack has been at least two quality bowlers short all year and seeing as we don't have a spinner, and LVC is played in April and September, we are reliant on seam. Hopefully next year we might have Shahzad and Jordan to go along with Magoffin to make a strong "three". Ben Brown's fine season with the bat and gloves is also a huge "positive" that we will hope can be repeated.

On paper, this season's recruitment was excellent. A month into the season the side was flying and looking like challenging at the right end.
Injuries on the bowling side and lack of application (rather than talent) on the batting side have contributed to the final sorry showing.
You can definitely question the coaching, but recruitment has not, imo, been the issue.
The lack of a quality spinner is the only obvious gap.

Excellent bowling this morning so far.
I said something similar before, and was wrong, but a big part of me would much rather see Yorkshire's batsmen ticking along at 3 an over WITHOUT losing wickets...
I would rather be playing for a draw tomorrow afternoon (with some sense that the wicket had flattened out a bit) than trying to score 260 to win batting last having just skittled the county champions.

I disagree very strongly with your statement that there's not much wrong with our batting. Too often the runs are scored when the pressure is off. Few of our players are able to leave the seaming ball outside off stump alone. Machan particularly treats every innings like a T20 bash. Occasionally it comes off to bolster his average. Usually we are two down with 40 on the board. At least two of our defeats would have been draws earlier this season if the batters were less gung ho.
I do agree, however taking wickets periodically can slow the run rate anyway, plus the fact if Yorks have wickets in hand later on they might start swinging the bat.
100% no. Sussex did not win a game in June, July, or August. That is pretty damning in a summer sport. The batting woes are identical to last season and nothing was done. We will lose another batsman this year, will Robinson actually sign someone? Or will he hope to muddle through again?
Totally disagree. We had two bowlers with long-term injuries who were set to miss the best part of the season, we'd just released one bowler and had another who was part of the England set-up. To replace those we recruited just three: one of whom had a history of injury problems and wouldn't be expected to play many games and one of whom had never played a first-class match. On top of that, as you point out, we lacked a spinner. So we were short of at least two bowlers.
We lost RHB and were about to lose Matt Prior and made no efforts to replace either - so we were at least one batsman short. That was piss-poor recruitment by any standards.
Yes, we were unlucky that Shahzad missed most of the season but you have to allow for injuries. I appreciate that Sussex aren't a rich county and have to pay Anyon and Hatchett while they're injured and don't have the funds for an extra bowler ... but we do pay for Piolet, Beer and Liddle. We're too small a team to pay for one-day specialists like that: we should have a team for all forms of cricket and pick our one-day team from that. Again, all down to poor recruitment
