We have Sidwell, he'll do a similar job at a lot less cost won't he?
Players wages aren't set in stone, if they want to stay in England but are out of contract or want to move, they know that Brighton wouldn't be paying the same level as the mighty Liverpool. A millionaire on say 100k a week won't blink at settling for say 50k a week to get him that contract in the Prem.

Would be a good addition to the squad IMHO. May be struggling to cement a place in a top 4/6 team (that plays a style of football not really suited to him) but bags of experience at the top level, plenty of years left and for us would be an upgrade on Sidwell and (on current-form anyway) Kayal. Worth considering if the price is right.

....and a view from the Liverpool forum (always worth popping onto the relevant forum to get a view) :

Jesus Christ he's played almost 340 games for the club. Genuinely shocked it's that many. A player never valued above the low price we paid for him, linked with a move away every summer, yet he's racked up more appearances for the club than Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez combined (granted a big chunk were as a late sub, including to wind down the clock...still...340 appearances, just let that sink in).

Did a bit of digging around for something he's done (which is where I discovered the 339 appearances)...7 goals in that time, assists he had 1 in over 100 games prior to his 'golden period' which included a flick on at West Brom, and a forward pass at Watford. No trophies. No stand out games of note. I'd add to his resume if I find anything else he has contributed (only positive stuff of course, so no slowing down play, too many touches followed by five yard pass specialist, immobile, defensively weak free kick give away merchant, or being a regular in an era where every single season we have conceded goals for fun).

It's the annual 'which club will Lucas leave for' debate, looks like Brighton this year;

Would be a brilliant signing. Cannot believe anyone thinks otherwise.

You've selected the view of one anti Lucas Leiva writer.

Many other fans and writers rate him as someone who shields his CB's, has a great tackle success rate and lays it off to players with a greater offensive skill set. When he first joined Liverpool, he was heavily criticised as not good enough, frustration borne out of the then owners not spending big bucks in every position unlike other clubs. He later won over most of his doubters. He can also fill in at CB.

Don't know if he'll join us or not, but I mention this to give balance.

As an out and out DM sitting in front of the back 4 the lad is quality. If we change to some adaption of a 3 man midfield he would be great alongside DS

This. Normally when you read a fan slating a defensive midfielder for 'passing the ball sideways, not scoring enough goals, and not providing any assists' when they've played over 300 times, it is the classic case of a fan not understanding the game, and a sign that they are actually a very good player. There's been a few players over the years that were always rated more highly by experienced managers than the average fan. Pretty sure I know who is right in that situation.

He's got 245 appearances for a TOP premier league team and 24 appearances for BRAZIL.........but yeah, he's not good enough for us.
