When it started, there wasn't that much about women. It started going down that road when FHM and other lads mags came out.

FHM predated Loaded by many years.

But, yes, they pulled the market in that direction. It was downhill from there.

My memory was that they stuck Liz Hurley on the cover of the first one in not an awful lot and the rest was history. That not to say my memory is correct from 30 ish years ago though. Did they cover that in the program?

Liz Hurley was not on the cover of the first one - that was Gary Oldman - but she was featured inside. The editor, founder - James Brown spends a lot of the doc - defending this point saying that men were on the cover for the majority of the 36 issues he was editor and if women were (eg: kylie) it was because they were talented musicians etc.
After he left - and partly because of the influence of other magazines in the market (FHM etc) that all changed - whether that was the fault of Loaded v1 or not - is essentially what th

We had James Brown on the podcast a couple of years ago, he was very entertaining. Martin Deeson now runs a consultancy from Sussex with his wife

Edited Four Four Two briefly (and very well) a few years ago. He's a very thoughtful , interesting football fan (Leeds) and good bloke . Rents out that lovely Sussex beach house he was interviewed in, in the doc.

Heartily recommend his book about playing 5 a side every week for years.

PS: Yes. but That was In January 2000, and Loaded's 100th issue - a long time after Britpop etc. Brown left in 1997. The doc - for the most part focuses on the first three years of the mag edited by James Brown, and his team ; Martin Deeson, Tim Southwell and Christian Smyth.

I only saw half of it but I’m glad they made the point that it really was an excellent read, before it just deteriorated into a dull soft porn mag later on. I really liked it and it’s food-based offshoot Eat Soup: good interviews with the likes of Michael Caine etc.

It was part of a bit of a moment: of acknowledging that jumping around at football, going out and getting drunk and silly with your mates etc were all normal, good fun things to do and generally didn’t harm anyone. And also that it’s possible to be interested in those things AND stuff about film, music, actors etc.

All that shouldn’t have needed saying but, as Loaded proved, obviously it did.

One Christmas edition came with a party bag (no drugs) attached to the cover. It contained a party hat, a small roll of love hearts, a joke, and one of these :

I qualified as a graphic designer in 1991, unfortunately the recession had kicked in. By the time I started job hunting a year later the industry was a wash with Loaded Mag type pricks and their arrogant ironic sexism and goatees. I thought f*** that and went back to being a decorator.

Surely they weren’t the only game in town though? If Loaded et al had some dominance it’s because they were good at promoting themselves and other publications weren’t. It was a very niche market. Who likes going out on a Friday, getting off their tits and then going to football the next day? Me and my mates. Who doesn’t? Everyone else.
