Truss sold her soul at about 25. She used to have acceptable social views, and then she realised the money and power came as being a mouthpiece for the super wealthy. I never thought I'd hate a PM more than Cameron, May, and Johnson. But here we are. If the UK public vote her in at the next election I can't see myself returning to this country for at least two decades. It's demoralising, frustrating and baffling in equal measures.

I've always fancied Italy . . . But its always been a basket case . . . . Which looks increasingly more stable and civilised than a rotting corpse of a country.

It's worth its own thread (as it will derail this), but I completely agree. I'd at least quadruple all politicians pay, not because the current lot deserve it but because it will hopefully bring in a way higher calibre of people. Currently as you say we've got third-rate minds running the country, or people like Sunak who don't need the money and treat it as a kind of hobby.

To take it further I'm not averse to the idea of political parties being publicly-funded rather than relying on large donations. Private donors, from Bernie Ecclestone for Labour through umpteen Tories, give money expecting (and getting) favours and honours in return. The larger your donation the more influence you have. It is corruption in its purest form.

Anyway, that's well O/T and I know it will divide opinion: 50% of you are thinking 'No', and the other 50% are thinking 'Hell, no!'

No, I totally agree - MPs are definitely underpaid for the work they do. And, yes, parties should be funded out of the public purse (to a certain extent).

one thing fascinating to watch, those that attacked the NI rise in spring now attacking the NI cut. it was unfair on poor then and unfair on poor now. how can it be both?

Truss is off her head. The country won't put up with bigger banker bonuses whilst small business goes to the wall. It doesn't even sound economically like it will do the things she says either. It's political suicide in action.

The only thing that can save them is the fear factor of "It'll be SNP and Labour"

The scary thing is with the FPTP system we have in the UK combined with general voter apathy there is a very good chance Truss will get re-elected even if she is a basket case

Indeed especially with many losing their businesses , can’t afford to heat their homes, feed their kids. We’re second only after the USA. Where’s Germany , France etc ?

Its wonderful to have a woman in charge of our country especially now that we have lost our Queen. Her appointment made me proud to have voted Tory even though I wish Johnson was still PM. I dont think a lot of people realise how popular Johnson still is - inside and outside the party.

Totally disagree, sorry. What do they actually do? Have you ever been to see your MP? I have and he told me all he can do is ask a question in Parliament on my behalf. It will get an answer from the Minister which would be the same answer that I would get from the Department concerned. So there you have it, they don’t actually do anything and you want to pay them more?
However I am in favour of doubling their wages providing we halve their numbers. The USA manage to get by with 400 congressmen and 100 senators. We have 650 MPs and 900 odd in the house of Lords. The gravy train should stop.

I have had contact with my MP and was very satisfied actually. I've also worked with a shadow minister back in the day and was impressed with the amount of work that he did. In fact, I've met quite a few MPs through work and none of them struck me as lazy. There are some MPs who are swinging the lead but most work pretty hard (debates, select committees, constituent complaints/issues/ social gatherings within a constituency etc).

This....the FPTP system is not democracy in action. The population had the chance to change it but voter apathy won the day again.
