Another question for El Pres/Peteinblack or any other lecturers. Does this increase in plagiarism (or attempted plagiarism) mean that we're likely to see a return to exam-based degrees rather than course/dissertation-based ones?

"Return to" exam-based degrees - both of our kids (graduated from Exeter and Brunel in 2006 & 2009) were examined every year and had to pass to progress?

But not every uni or course does that or plagiarism would not be a problem.

I graduated 30 years ago and I had one exam at the end of the course (counted for 5% of my degree IIRC) and the trend since then has been for fewer exams and more course assessment, not less.

Open University degrees normally have 6 or 7 tutor marked assessments and an end of course exam. You need to pass both and the lowest score is the one that makes up your score which seems a fair way of doing it. No idea how "real" universities do it.

Thats part of being a child, safety obsessed :wanker:

I find it remarkable that this woman feels she is in a position to say what is safe and what is not safe for children. What is an International Public Health Policy? What credence does it have?

"High tackles should be banned" - What is her definition of a high tackle? My definition of a high tackle is alredy outlawed.

Scrums? Goodness me. I was taught how to scrum properly and safely at the age of seven. Of course, accidents do happen, but most sports carry an inherent risk of injury.

Took TRHK Jnr to see Sheffield Uni the other day. The Head of Admissions was talking about plagiarism software. All essays etc submitted electornically as word files and then this software goes to work. Has almost completely eradicated plagiarism. Lasy year it picked up one student who appeared to have copied a very obscure paper from another student at another uni. Turns out it was the same student who had done his first year at a different uni - who had then put his work online. No reason for him to rewrite the essay at his new college, so he just submitted it. Perfectly legit but even that was picked up - so don't think plagiarism willbe too much of an isue for too long. However, paying to get essays done for you......that's a whole nother issue. I know someone who used to make a living writing Uni essays for under grads. Norty!

Perhaps what we need to see is a return to academic studies at University and vocational studies elsewhere, as it was with the good old Polytechnics.

Indeed, I had a place at a Uni (Surrey) to study Engineering however I went to a poly because they were set up for the people like me, who had no A levels but the relevant HNC. My main driver was that the Poly in question offered extra maths, which allowed me to bridge the gap between HNC and A levels.

At the end of my first year the Poly became a Uni much to the disgust of the Engineering school, mainly because they had their funding cut as the money was required for the new courses that the Uni wanted to offer, funnily enough one was Media studies. The core Poly courses seemed to be scuppered for the new fangled Uni courses, madness.

However, it’s still apparent that ‘vocational’ is a dirty word when it comes to HE, Physicists are fine however Engineers are not, unless they’ve studied at Oxbridge … obviously.

I signed up for a writing website that offered me money for writing articles on subjects that I 'specialise in'. It twigged when I received my first assignment (should have twigged before I signed up) that I would be writing uni assignments when I received a title with spelling mistakes. Needless to say I binned it and de-registered.

Here it is 70% exam and 30% assessment, but most of the assessments are submitted electronically and therefore it is relatively easy to use plagiarism spotting software to identify the cheats.
