so you'd be ok with those same fans booing another countries national anthem? or fans booing during the knee?

there's a matter of etiquette with national anthems, whether you like them or not.

I’m saying scrap the ridiculous notion of a national anthem at a club level game.

Is that even relevant?

Yes because we have a terrible "national" anthem, only sung by convention at England games because England hasn't got one.

It isn't even about the country, it's a depressing dirge about God saving the Monarch more akin to something sang in North Korea.

You should read the second verse, so embarrassing we don't even bother to sing it.

So what. I don’t see why the queen needs saving by god and I don’t know why people are expected to sing along in agreement.

Time to get rid.

Btw city fans were ignoring it too.

I’m not English but your remark sounds disrespectful to me . It’s clearly wrong to boo your countries national anthem . Would never happen in the States .

:goal:

Borne out by sportsmen miming badly when it’s played. Whereas the French, Irish, Welsh belt out theirs with passion.

Wrong how? Why?

As for doing things like in the United States... lets all avoid it. If possible, I suggest doing the opposite at any opportunity.

Why do they insist on playing this ghastly "anthem" before football games? We do not live in the 1600s anymore, nobody, NOBODY cares about that lot and what relevance does this "anthem" have in a football game?

I'm glad the Liverpool lot sang their own anthem, the more that do it the less likely we have to have this thrusted upon us once again.

Thankfully the youth of today couldn't care less about the monarchy so it's only a matter of time before they stop doing it.

The anthem is booed because the city has been badly treated by the establishment twice - Thatcher in the 80s with let the city die and the cover up over Hillsborough

Why is Thatcher relevant? That was decades ago. The world has moved on but Liverpool continues to embarrass itself at every opportunity.

If the world has moved on, why do some expect people to lap up a dirge about a god saving a monarch?

Verse six doesn’t exactly do much for the Union.

Lord grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God Save the King."

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…………..
.
The romanticism and sympathy for the inhabitants of Merseyside  are part of the cause of things like the Brighton Kop :tosser:

You can always rely on a scouser to let you down eventually.

sure, thats fair and i dont know why bother for this game when no other club games have it (Cup finals). once an anthem is playing though, we should politelty accept it, remain quiet. once you're saying its ok to boo one, all are up for vocal distruption, and then we have the booing the knee or any other pre-game ritual.

Or ahead of the game on this particular one. With a long term zero reverence for the National Anthem / an establishment that saw widespread poverty in parts of the UK, whilst some posh rich folk went round fox hunting and grabbing the best seats at sporting events when tournaments got juicy (Wimbledon, Wembley, Twickers).

Easy to see why the sticking plaster will fall off when this bloke takes over https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/prince-charles-tony-blair-fox-hunting-letters-published-information-commissioner-public-read-royal-wales-a7856651.html .

The awful national anthem deserves no bow and scrape.

Nicola Sturgeon doesn't do much for the union either.
