Littlehampton - what is it like for a family day out?

Ronnie Barker used to live down South Terrace, Littlehampton, is he scum? There's really no need to be insulting to fellow Albion supporters, I just don't understand why some people feel the need, I don't.

If I was to draw up a list of the places I would least want to spend a day in Sussex, Littlehampton would be a significant contender for the honour.

Littlehampton drew up a list of tadgers they would least like to spend a day in their town, you were the most significant contender for the honour.

Are we talking about the same place? I haven't been there for ages, but whenever I have virtually everybody appears to be on drugs. It's not like I've claimed Kensington & Chelsea is full of scum!

I often visit Littlehampton. Obviously with one's eyes open one sees some of the less desirable elements of society. But, i haven't seen them as you describe. I've seen few people walking about town who 'seem to be on drugs'. Blackpool on the other hand.....

LA...wishing it was devon..
TCB - i think you will find the OP asked about a family day out.. and that is what LA is based on - and to be fair to the council, they have made it a good day out.
i would not argue about the dodgy areas and influx of foreigners etc... but as a local i am qualified to have that opinion.

I love the hypocrisy of this site. If we were talking about Rotherham or Hull or Barnsley or some other northern shithole everybody would in agreement. But because this particular black spot on the landscape is a little closer to home everybody pretends it doesn't exist. Wake up, morons.

You're the black spot on the landscape, you obnoxious little turd.

Avoid the town at all costs, full of Russians and Polish and on a downward spiral, however Rustington Village is far more pleasant and only a mile or so up the road.[/]

How on earth did you arrive at this conclusion? ? ? You must of had a heavy weekend if you're seriously recommending a 100yd stretch of charity shops, stationers and banks Frequented exclusively by the 60+ age range over LA, or anywhere for that matter. Nice flowers AND THAT IS IT.

The Weatherspoons isn't that bad, mind you my yardstick of crap ones is Sittingbourne which makes LA seem like Cannes or Monte Carlo!

Sadly I can concur about the drug scene, I did some work out on the Railway Station approaches for Network Rail a few years back and the tracks had been festooned with fluorescent paint rings by the Maintenance Crews to show where the discarded syringes had landed - I can only presume the local smack heads had organised Away Days?

Re: Poles/Russians in LA. I had some Polish mates when I grew up in Cheshire as there was quite a big Polish colony in Northwich for the ICI Chemical works - given their attitudes to Russians back then I would have thought it a recipe for big trouble.....

Every town has it's horrible areas, I grew up in Littlehampton in the Beaumont park area and never once felt like I lived in a horrible area. Littlehampton is what you make it, the beach is a good day out and the surrounding area of Mewsbrooks is nice too, so don't listen to the naysayers. Life is what you make of it and if you go to Littlehampton wanting to see druggies you'll see druggies, but if you go with a positive outlook I'm sure you'll have a great day out with your family.

How on earth have we got to page 3 without anybody mentioning the place on Pier Road (by the river) that sells ice creams, with flakes, dipped in chocolate? Best treat ever.

Thanks for the heads-up. I can earn some brownie-points with my wife with that little tip!

As someone who moved to Littlehampton just short of a year ago, there's plenty going for it in terms of the seafront and attractions (i regularly hit the pitch & putt in Norfolk Gardens) and would be good for a family day out.

There are some shite areas, most of which i'm luckily not subjected to that often (i live just outside it, the other side of the old Body Shop roundabout) but it's just a case of avoiding the crap areas. The town centre is disappointing, but if you want shopping then i doubt you'd have chosen LA to go.

Harbour Park with a variety of rides and amusements, 9 hole pitch and putt along the seafront, Mewsbrook Park which is pleasant and lots going on along the seafront and into the towns Harbour.

Freds fish and chips is well recommended whilst you sit on the harbour wall but there is also a good selection of small restaurants along Beach Road.

Avoid the town at all costs, full of Russians and Polish and on a downward spiral, however Rustington Village is far more pleasant and only a mile or so up the road.
This, Munckin knows his stuff.

Park up somewhere near the swimming pool.
Promenade to the river, see what takes your fancy.
The beach is pretty clean
STOP AT THE RIVER.
Get the train back which drops you off into Mewsbrooks, (behind pool) which is a great traditional park.
Then Rustington should you want/need shops.

When were you last there, and what did you do?

Don't stop at the river. Take the little harbour ferry across to the other side and explore West Beach. As other posters have commented its the quieter of the two, when the tide retreats there are lovely sandy beaches and the back of the beach has really nice dunes that back onto the golf course. The west beach cafe at the car parkby the river is now under the same ownership as the striking metal one that has one various design awards on east beach seafront - the food is really nice in both - pricey but a massive step up from your usual seafront fare.

The negative comments on the town are largely unwarranted...and I should know as I've lived here for the last 13 years.

Oh - and if you fancy a BBQ instead there is a designated BBQ area on the east (main) beach seafront with permanent BBQ's and hot bins were you can dump the disposable types after.
