We hurl all types of abuse at football matches and that is deemed acceptable.

What sets social media apart from the above?

I may question the parentage of someone who scores against us and may suggest that the match officials enjoy self-pleasure. But I am have never said to a player that the performance they have just given would make their recently deceased father displeased. I am also pleased to say I have never heard anyone else do it.

There is a big difference between calling the ref a w@nker and this.

not sure I've ever said something about an 18-year old's dead father

I think the problem with social media, and the internet in general is that a number of people think that you can just say whatever the hell you like without any consequences.........this is wrong surely? If it takes cases like this to sort out that attitude, then I'm all for punishing the shit out of him. Sending messages to someone about their dead dad is clearly wrong

as you brought up the football crowd scenario, there seems to be a ready made excuse of "it's only banter" which people are very quick to hide behind....not sure I agree with that either, but there is a fine line (we, as Brighton fans know this all too well), and it's not clear where the line is at all. Racism and homophobia are clear no-no's, but there is so much more "abuse" that goes on in football games that those shouting would never dream of using in the "real world". How many Spurs fans would ACTUALLY go up to Wenger and call him a pedophile, for example

I think the difference is that it is easy to get swept along with the crowd, and copy what they are saying/shouting, without actually meaning what you say. Before you do realise, it is obviously too late, and, with really personal insults, you end up looking like a plum to those around you.

With social media (including forums such as this), there is ALWAYS the option to stop and re-read what you have written, just to make sure you REALLY want to put it out in the public domain. Maybe this is the problem, and people don't realise the implications of what they are writing? It is obvious (I hope) that what these turds have written is not what they truly think, but they just haven't made use of all their available brain cells before pressing the 'post' button.

In my opinion, a football crowd chanting insults at a player/official, pales into insignificance next to someone actively targetting Tom Daley via Twitter, not to mention that ex-Big Brother guy having a pop at Gary Barlow when he'd lost his daughter, just so that he could get 'noticed' (what was all THAT about?).

Got to have been hacked, surely?

Abuse sent to Dorset police, and more aimed at Tom just hours ago.

pretty much the same reason why people on here react to a palace wanker who comes on HERE to post and get a reaction.
these cockjugglingthundercunts only post for one reason..if everyone ignored them, they'd get bored and f*** off somewhere else....but people can't stop themselves biting.

He bought followers!

As someone who works in the industry, it really pisses me off when people do that. There's a few people i know who are marketers that have done the same to look good...they're complete pricks to boot, so maybe there's a correlation.

Exactly. You make a reasonable post and then one with a spelling mistake, guaranteed that the spelling mistake would get more replies.
