I would be interested to know where this fact was/is. Im a bit of an amatuer Ripperologist and I hadnt heard of this!
George Thomas Humphreys a cobbler who played for Sussex at cricket (he died unexpectedly of a blood clot in 1894) beat Emanuel Lasker the World chess champion in Brighton.

True, although Lasker was WC for 27 years: players at that standard hardly need a board.However it was a blindfolded game with Lasker playing multiple tables at the same time.
