Don't download music. It is the reason why fewer and fewer new bands are being taken up by major record labels nowadays. Most artists won't care if you download music as they get most of their income from tours and merchandise, however record companies will. Sure you may hate them but now artists aren't getting the exposure that they need or having very little investment in them. Basically, by downloading music you are killing the industry.

NOT A BIG DEAL, you think downloading mucsic for free is NOT A BIG DEAL!!!

I'm going to show you something, and I don't think you're going to like it....

THANK YOU... some sanity at last. Anyone who thinks that downloading music for free is killing the industry are nuts. People like me who are nostalgic for older music or less mainstream can pretty much ONLY download illegally as all the major labels cut any band, singer or archived album as soon as its not profit making. Illegal downloading pretty much gurantees that some artists stay alive because after all, the essence of music is that you GET HEARD!

If the money was taken out of music so that cost was not so ridiculous then perhaps illegal downloading would not seem such a good idea.

p.s. my view may be different from other on here but thats partly because I live abroad. I cant even buy a kindle book on amazon because of tax laws..... art constrained because money is more important.

Napster's supposed to be really good, although I heard a rumour that Metaillica are trying to have it shut down. You heard it here first.

It's not about the artists who are signed, most of them are incredibly marketable. As a result of piracy very few labels are signing acts nowadays who are a bit different. Hence why everything in the industry sounds the same.

Debatable as to whether that's a result of free music downloads or not. It could equally be down to lazy label bosses looking to make a quick buck from stuff they know will sell in the mainstream market.

There's never been a better time for smaller bands to get themselves heard, a band can have a big following online now without being signed or marketed. It just means that they probably won't be making any money either. Personally I think the internet has just diluted everything.

In theory digital downloads should open the door for lots of small independant labels getting their music out there, it certainly has on the dance music scene - with sites like Beatport around it's never been easier for producers to get their stuff heard.

Thats not the truth... something they just say. The cutting down on signing of 'edgy acts' dates back to the late eighties and early nineties, long before the introduction of internet downloading.

The story of Big Country's demise is evidence of this... how a band, even when they were near the top of the charts were having the hands tied over what they could record by a record label because the white shirts said it was not marketable. Another example was Fish who was hugely popular in Europe and with a big background but major labels wouldnt take the risk, forcing him to form his own label.

google whatever song you want and add either 'hulk' or 'zippy' to the end of it, sometimes works

in reality though, a lot of smaller artists are putting their stuff on bandcamp where you pay as much/little as you want, normally starting from between £1-5, which i think is quite a good idea as its such a small amount, and at least the artist makes a little bit rather than nothing....

£9.99 per month but as homeworker who listens to it all day it is the absolute bees knees.

I fully agree that Spotify is well worth every penny as long as you're not the sort of person who likes to own stuff on a physical disk, as I don't think you can copy the music onto CD's (not that ive tried)

However you can download onto your phone / laptop and sync it to play it offline without eating up data on the move :)

I miss the days of Limewire. It improved the world greatly.

But I've always been the type to want to have music physically in my hand, I miss the CDs. I download from 7digital.co.uk now, little bit overpriced at times but I don't buy too much music so it's not a disaster.

I have a `friend` that used to use `Limewire` before it was closed down. I of-course was disgusted by this illegal behaviour, how some people can take advantage of those multi-millionaire artists that have had to sing their socks off, sometimes for over three minutes, sickens me. Does anybody know of any similar sites that music can be downloaded safely and for free, then I will check his computer to see if he is using any of them and of -course, report him to the relevant authorities immediately. Thanks.

I use a YouTube converter. Pick any song you want on YouTube and you can use a site to change it into mp3 and you can wack it straight in your iTunes. Totally legal as far as I'm aware.

I can't believe that people's friends haven't mentioned extratorrent. I have heard you can download music, films, etc. It's a disgrace the websites like this offer movies with good quality when they are still in the cinema. It's destroying the movie industry.
