It was a protest vote against the PM not the Conservative party. Anyone with the smallest ounce of intelligence knows that.

True blue Conservatives always play the long term game and are quite happy to blow up the party to correct itself. That's why they are the most successful political party.

Like all political parties they try to rely on the fanatical fans (who view the leaders like pop stars) to get them over the line.

Unfortunately they are usually put out of office by the floating voter who is willing to change allegiance.
