If we do manage to sign him, I reckon it'll mean Duffy's getting dropped.

What on earth makes you think that? Shane Duffy is one of the first on Chris Hughton's team sheet l reckon, and his pairing with Lewis Dunk was a big reason for our success last season.

I'm all for signing Liam Moore, (at the right price), but he has to earn his place in the side over time, the same as everyone else.

Goldson must be the one of the most over rated players in our history. He has 32 appearances for us in the top two divisions and all I hear is we were robbed. Maybe he went a bit below market value but not too much. We were hardly robbed.

Moore, on the other hand, has almost 150 appearances for Leicester and Reading (all in the top two divisions) and yet, according to many on here, Goldson should have been first choice for us and Moore isn't good enough (despite being a key player for Reading). And Moore is actually a month younger than Goldson.

Absolutely right, I'm glad someone was brave enough to make those comments about Connor Goldson. Never a bad player but as your rightly say, completely untried at Premier League, and very few Championship games behind him too.

I have no idea what goes through some people's minds.

£10m seems an awful amount for just backup player. I'd be surprised if he wants to join us just to warm the bench, especially at his young age with all these clubs after him.

Well firstly, no one joins the Albion as a 'back up' player, they are there to fight for a place, and if they are good enough they get picked to play. In any case football is an evolving business, players gain form players lose form, and then there are injuries and suspensions to take into the equation.

Secondly 25 isn't really considered to be that young for a footballer, maybe not quite at the peak of his ability but not far off.

Thirdly, has any other club made an offer yet? I'm not aware of it if they have.

Southampton have just gone on a preseason tour leaving behind two players who cost considerably more than £10m each and they took 30 players with them !
Our U23s thrashed a Stoke side 5-1 at the end of last season, and Stoke had two £15m players on the pitch.

Don't expect the club to confirm numbers, but the Mateju deal is rumoured to be a loan with agreement to buy at 5m Euros, works out at £4.4m at current exchange rates, for a player that hasn't even made our squad!

The numbers are big, but our spending is still relatively modest, compared to some of our rivals.

We will likely have to pay big money for another keeper, as well. The alternative is that we let injuries, suspensions, loss of form and International call ups, take their course and we throw in inexperienced players into critical games. No one should be coming to the club, as a backup. Every signing should be viewed by the player, the club and the supporters, as someone who can offer something to improve the team.

Exactly. People seem to think he's amazing based on one decent performance against a dreadful Watford team. Yes, he did win man of the match but there wasn't a lot of competition that day as nobody played great.

It really irritates me how people seem to think they know better than the recruitment team. They say we've been robbed for Goldson and we shouldn't pay this much for Moore yet they've rarely seen Moore play and have not seen Goldson much for the last two seasons.

That still doesn't mean he's going to want to sit on the bench when he's got other options. Maybe he's being considered to compete for Duffy's place? Most top teams in this division have 2 ball playing centre backs in their starting line-up. We've currently got one. Why do people think Duffy has cemented his place? I personally see him as the weak link in our starting 11. Every pass is straight to Dunk. We need to be quicker at getting the ball out of defence.

Secondly 25 isn't really considered to be that young for a footballer, maybe not quite at the peak of his ability but not far off.

In terms of defenders, 25 is still young. Most defenders are still in their peak at 32/33. So yes, Moore is still young.

Thirdly, has any other club made an offer yet? I'm not aware of it if they have.

The Reading Chronicle has stated that a host of clubs are tracking him. I've already posted the link (1 page back)

He won’t come here because Duffy is guaranteed a place. He will come here because Duffy isn’t guaranteed a place.
Yes one of them.

- club don’t have “back up players”

We signed Krul for this specific reason and he never played.

- £10m really isn’t a lot for the Prem League.

For a club like Brighton, £10m is still a lot of money. We've only bought 2 players above that figure. Both were record signings at the time.

- He’s the same age as Dunk and Duffy

Which is very young in relation to defenders.

- Of course the club expect him to be playing, if he signs, and if the opportunities arise , but that doesn’t mean they won’t have 3 other centre backs who are likewise. He will know that.

Agreed. From what I've been told by a Reading fan, he's potentially a future England talent. They're raving about him, like we did with Dunk in that division.

- since Hughton arrived the recruitment policy has been pretty simple - keep your best players and strengthen the squad with stronger additions each window. Not sure what the surprise is.

I get the impression we're looking to strengthen our strengths, not just add depth in these positions. We;re still a long way from reaching the desired on the pitch standard. I'm pretty sure Bloom said this in a recent fans forum.

Yes, saw the link. The Reading Chronicle didn't name a single club (except us) - just waffled on about 'a host'. Dead convincing that!

Goalkeepers are the exception not the back up rule.
Agreed re £10m - he’d be our 4th in 12 months though. It’s getting quite common. We are a rich club .

I'd trust a local newspaper report over tabloid rumours.

If it had actually reported anything concrete, yes...........if they've just been talking to the agent - or making up stuff that won't really be refuted - then they are no better than the worst tabloid. Flying a kite!

Don't local rags usually have good relations with their local football club? I'd be surprised if the 'host of clubs' stuff's being made-up. He's a top talent and (according to Reading fans) will be a great signing for us. Why play down his demand?

Indeed, we certainly do have a lot of money to spend. The reason that we don't is because we choose not to, (or Tony does), not because we can't afford to.

You posted the link as if it was answer to "what other clubs have been linked anywhere?" - and it wasn't an answer at all. So even if 'hosts of clubs' is official direct from the club (which I very much doubt) it didn't answer the question.

So, who else is interested? Or alternatively, name who is included in 'hosts'.

As I questioned...who else is mentioned? as no where have I seen anything anywhere that is not just about Moore and Brighton full stop.
