He was outstanding for us and an automatic pick. The fact that he left under a cloud with his behaviour shouldn’t take away his outstanding form for us,

The difference for me is that Byrne and Small left because we needed the money - Bridcutt left because he thought he was bigger than us (and wanted more money).

He was flawless for us, even banging in a couple of crucial winners in 4-3 wins in the League 1 ROMPING season. He was a cut above, a clear example of a player being used to his strengths and building a team around the sum of its parts. He hasn't been as effective anywhere else, but that team we had under Gus suited him down to the ground. Top class player for us for 2 years, all the very best to him. I'll never have a bad word to say about Liam Bridcutt.

Think it was Kuiper’s testimonial, I was with my 8 year old son and his friends after the game. He walked past and I called him to see if he would do a photo, autographs etc. He turned round, decided we weren’t worth talking to and walked off.

A long time ago 11 year old me approached Doug Rougvie, who was out injured, at the Goldstone and asked him to sign my programme.
Embarrassingly for both of us my pen didn’t work.
Rougvie said “hold on a minute” and approached some people nearby and asked if they had a pen. They didn’t, and he asked the next lot.
He came back, signed my programme and then gave the pen pack to the owner.
A minor example of class, but one I haven’t forgotten.

He left under a cloud as he had his head turned by a bitter Poyet. Regardless of his connection with Poyet, I think he’d have been long gone before a Hughton arrived. As for his character, he was a lovely guy every time I met him(probably around half a dozen times) and was always happy to stop and chat with me and my boy. I think it was Gordon Greer on the Albion and Me podcast who said that Bridcutt was one of the best he played with, due to how he managed his position on the pitch

I remember in the late 60s approaching Harold Wilson for his autograph as he strolled from the Grand to the conference centre with Jim Callaghan (Yes - you could do that sort of thing in those days !) He willingly signed my newspaper photo and then strolled into the building taking my best biro with him.

I’m afraid you don’t have the monopoly on “f*ck off” put downs. At the back of the West Stand ( Goldstone) I climbed on the Rotherham team bus to get Tommy Docherty’s (Rotherham manager) autograph and he told me to f*ck off too. Unfortunately I don’t have a good track record with managers - in 1973(?) Brian Clough asked if I was one of the f*cking c*nts who caused problems at Southend the previous week. Not me guv.
