[Other Sport] Lewis Hamilton the greatest living British sportsman?

The greatest living British sportsman for me is probably Chris Hoy, just ahead of Steve Redgrave. Of the main stream spectator sports, I think Murray and Jonny Wilkinson both have claims.

I'm a keen cycling fan, but I'd probably have Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome ahead of Chris Hoy. Wiggins achievements across the cycling spectrum, from track Olympic success, to time trial gold, to winning Le Tour – incredible. Mark Cavendish is widely considered the best road sprinter of all time. Hugely underappreciated in Britain, massively respected as one of the all time greats outside. Not to take away Chris Hoy's achievements, but if we are talking greatest living British Sportsman, I'm not sure how Hoy can be in there ahead of his contemporaries.

I didn't research our other cyclists and will happily bow to you on this one. I'd put them all ahead of tax dodging Lewis though.

It's an impossible question to answer.
He seems to be a big part in the best team in F1 at the moment. He's won the most races ever but do they have the same amount of races or more than previous years. Not a big F1 fan myself so don't know.

And yet people are happy to compare football players from different eras, despite the fact that the game has changed completely from when (e.g.) Stan Matthews, Pele, Maradona, Shearer or even Zidane were at their best.

It's not an impossible question to answer. Lewis Hamilton has won more F1 races than anyone else, ever. So he's the best in his sport of all time.

Do we have anyone else currently who is?

Which makes him the best ever F1 driver. I get that but you can't compere him to sports people from different sports. I'd imaging Ryan Giggs has won more football matches, Paula Radcliffe may have won more races, I'd guess Steve Davis has won more snooker matches than Lewis has won F1 races. He may be the best ever sportsman he may not but, is up there with the best there is.

His record in F1 speaks for itself and I really hope he goes on the break the others.

Lewis Hamilton is HUGELY underrated by the british public and press as he is black. It is that simple really, and hugely embarrassing and depressing that our country is like that.

I think it is more his personality than his race, look how the public used to love Frank Bruno.

The problem for many borderline racists is that Hamilton doesn’t know his place. If he kept quiet and toed the line then he would be tolerated.

Rowing isn't a sport. It's something posh boys do to relieve the tedium of public school instead of ************.

Cycling isn't a sport either. It's the same as driving but without an engine (see rowing without the posh bit).

Horse riding is just lazy exploitation of animals, getting them to do all the hard graft.

Motor racing - might as well stand on a motorway bridge and watch the M25 all day. Tedious and anonymous.

As an an avid F1 Fan for decades I can confirm categorically and without question Hamilton is a complete t!t .....Button on the other hand, the VERY model of a sporting Legend in my eyes and hasn’t won a thing in comparison. Hamilton is a great driver, that is beyond debate, but a model sportsman he ain’t.
