They got a transfer ban for breaching regs relating to signing players under 18. Having spent nothing for the last 2 windows, they're going all in this summer. Werner and Ziyek have already been brought in for a combined 80-odd million.

Yup. This "rumour" (is it even a rumour anywhere outside this thread) is just fantasy. United wont sell him. Perhaps loan him out for another year, but they wont sell him. And if they did, £30m wouldnt be close to enough for a 23 year old "keeper of the year" candidate contracted to United.

I’ve been expecting Dunk to leave ever since we signed Lallana and a lot was made of his leadership on the pitch. Twinned with the no marketing of Dunk at all in the new shirt etc. and it seemed the writing was on the wall.

If you throw in the mix the whole Chelsea fan thing together with the fact that he wouldn’t have to move home if he played for Chelsea then you can see the appeal for Dunk.

Chelsea look as though they want Rice but why not both? They are truly woeful at the back so Dunk and Rice would be a great move for them. And they are clearly ready to spend big now.

Also think Lampard is a great match for Dunk. Couldn’t see him playing for a foreign coach somehow.

It all seems like a great fit, provided the price is right, and I think if it is £40m+, maybe reaching £50m+ then Bloom will think that’s a great price for a player that is possibly 2-3 years away from starting to slow down. At the same time we are blessed with great strength at centre half.

All of that tells me it’s as good as a done deal, and we should wish Dunk all the best. What a player and what a man he has been for our club.

Not amazing business. Necessary business, maybe. Think we should ask for & expect more.

£40m for an England international in the prime of his career is potentially a steal for Chelsea.

Top class defenders frequently retire after 38 or so these days. Could have 10 years in him yet.

Looking forward to reading that list of defenders who were still playing at 38 for top sides. There have been few. Yes, players do stay on until 35/36.
But there’s no resale value or longevity of playing. He’s 29 in November. So even 6 years playing time equates to a significant amortisation payment each year for chelski if we were able to get £50m. It’d be brilliant if we can.

I hope he stays actually and plays alongside White, which would be great for his development.

All of this is true but, sorry Dunky, club before ANY player. He IS our most valuable player, so the deal has to be very good indeed, or no sale. IMHO £40m is too low. £50m yes.

I just think MR comes in for too much criticism at times for someone that is kept fairly busy. I also think that the modern GK is judged on skills that are in no way near as relevant to what a keeper needs to do. Yes, distribution is important but handling, reflexes and decisions are paramount. Near post is a very dated adage from the prehistoric era when balls were slow moving and heavy and strikers were the same. Now days I think it’s unfair to blame a keeper for a howitzer at 80mph from a military grade athlete because it was ‘near post’. It’s an easy criticism but not a realistic one in the elite era IMO. Ryan is quick and agile, has good handling and while he won’t drop a ball on a penny from 50 yards can still play a modern way, not forgetting if we are going to critique his distribution it should also be noted who is receiving it. Maybe when we have a top 6 front 3 we can recalibrate the GK expectancy.

Just my opinion obviously, but I like Schmeichel, Pope, Dubravka, Allison, Foster. Are they better or worse than MR? Poss. I would stand by MR being in or around top 5 in the league on his day. Henderson is good season but I haven’t seen enough of to pass judgement. Kepa is a total gimp, Ederson mediocre. Pickford is the personification of the reality of modern GK demands gone wrong. My point - to spend any money replacing MR would have to be a lot of money to get not that much better. Would rather see invested in firepower and other areas. Maybe sign Foster from Watford on the cheap as back up / serious competition.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. Just I can’t agree. Maybe I’m stuck in the past. Tbf I did consider adding Krul to my list.

My issue with Ryan is that he relies more heavily on his reflexes, speed and agility because he lacks the size that many other top keepers have. To me this means he is unlikely to be one of those still playing top level approaching 40. He is 28 now, reflexes get slower after about age 21, I think it's downhill from here for his career, not suggesting its anywhere near over, just that its not likely we will see him improve. Christian Walton might bring about some serious competition and push Ryan to be better, but I think he will take over as the first choice keeper, this season or next.

And this is the problem - White will have very big shoes to fill and, while he has potential, that can take time. The more goals you ship at the back the more you have to score upfront - and that meets a point of diminishing returns.

Brighton should be looking to buy players for £40million if the club wants to progress - not selling them. One or two injuries would create a big problem.

I’ll be honest, I’ve not read every post in this thread, last night I responded to someone who had pointed out that we were 2nd favourites with the bookies to sign Henderson, I said that would be an upgrade. I’ve no idea where the £30m figure has come from, I’ve also not noticed any mention that he’d sign here, just a back and forth about whether he’s better than Ryan.

Giroud is the starting striker for the French national team and despite his age is linked to basically every top team outside of England. When was the last time the French starting no 9, with a fat wage bill, hunted by the likes of Juventus, Inter decided to sign for the 15th placed club in the PL? Never.

Abraham.. top scorer in 4th placed Chelsea, with a manager very keen on rejuvenating the team. Recent part of the England squads. I repeat: top scorer in Chelsea. On what planet does the Chelsea top scorer move to Brighton? Liverpool wont sell Salah to Brighton. City wont sell Aguero to Brighton. United wont sell Rashford to Brighton. And Chelsea wont sell Abraham to Brighton. Its not ****ing rocket science, really.

The foreign coach thing is an odd one. Lewis played for Oscar and, more pertinently, Gus after all. Mourinho's an admirer too apparently.
