I think Chelsea will sell him, personally. When do they ever actually bring young players through? They'll say he's not for sale and then they'll see someone else they want to buy and suddenly they'll change their mind and let him go. I just don't think we'll pay that kind of fee though, there is better value out there.
It depends what that fee is. I reckon anything up to 45m is really good value on say a 5 year contract with option to extend.

20, knows us, can play left back as well. First team player.

Or say 25/30 on a total gamble like Matt Bianco

It’s the Chelsea way, obnoxious club from top to bottom and they always have been, even before the Russian bank rolled them. A nouveau riche Millwall in fact.

As @Simster says they are also a club “look at me “ glory hunting celebrities have latched onto during their rise through obscene money. Jeremy Vine being the one who grates the most with me
I am in general agreement about Chelsea and many of their fans. However Jeremy Vine grew up with a very good friend of mine and he was always a Chelsea fan. Sutton United more though. As our mutual friend said to me, when you chose Chelsea in the 70s, there was little if any glory in it.

My comparison is on one level only. The fans hope that their club can keep their loan player when clearly, they are top level and the club with the ownership is not going to contemplate letting them go.

Tony: Hi The Todd, can we keep Levi.

The Todd: Yes Tony, you can.

Tony: £15m?

The Todd: Sorry Tony, I’ve been learning my lessons between my frequent snacking. Do you think Levi is better than Cucurella?

Tony: Isn’t that obvious?

The Todd: Well you’ll need to pay more than we paid for Marc. You are the top six side now. And if you ever, ever sell us a pup like Potter again, I’ll sue you into the 23rd century.

Tony: Does £16m work?

I’m in no way comparing the behaviour of Brighton fans with Leeds fans over the two sagas. That’s is a banning offence. Leeds fans were inexcusably deluded, arrogant and embarrassing over the Ben White thing. That is not us.
To be fair I wasn't that bothered about the way their fans were behaving, it's what fans do, I certainly judge most football related things through my Albion filters. What really got me was wanker z-list pundits like Jermaine Beckford and Kevin Phillips piling in. Think their owner made a couple of snarky comments as well.

That was posted just after Chelsea lost 4-1, and given the four finger gesture, looks like he is laughing at them getting beaten.

As JetsetJimbo put very well above, fans don’t really like that from their players. They think he ought to be feeling the pain like a fan right now.
Ah, ok. Football fans are a precious lot. If there's the slightest chance to take offense we will!

Sorry not followed the thread, but I was really angry reading about Colwill in the Metro this morning. The story claimed he has outraged Chelsea's dipshit fans by enjoying the drubbing by United. It should have read: British media attempt to ruin the life of a 19 year old by equating his enjoyment of helping his current side qualify for Europe with the dreadful performance of his owners.

There is a tendency for football fans to think the players their club has developed owe something to the club and, by extension, the fans. We all do it tbh, even though thinking about it for a while reveals the situation to be a bit more complicated than that. You can see it in our fans' reaction to the Sanchez situation - while his behaviour and Colwill's aren't remotely comparable, the fan reactions to both are coming from the same place, a sense of "you're one of our boys, how could you do this to us".

Football fans are an emotional bunch. I'm speculating a lot here, but I think a part of it is that, as a fan, playing for your club is one of the greatest honours you can imagine; so it stings a bit when you're confronted with the fact that actual professional players don't love the club in the same way you do as a fan. Again, when you think about it logically, we all know this on some level - one-club men like Dunky are so rare in football, players can't really afford to have the same emotional attachment to a club that fans do because they never *really* know where they'll be playing from one season to the next.

None of this makes any of the toxic comments okay, of course. Just trying to explain what leads a person to that kind of weird, dark place.

As far as these particular two players are concerned, it seems pretty clear that they'd each rather be at each other's club. Colwill wants to be at Brighton and Sanchez wants to be at Chelsea. The solution seems obvious and I hope the clubs can hammer something out.
No, the fans reactions to Colwill and Sanchez do not come from the same place. Sanchez has been part of a Europe chasing team and squad all season. His decision to stay home rather than support his club and team mates get over the line is despicable and disrespects all. He actually risked upsetting a season's work by not being available on the bench in case Steele got injured despite Steele doing it for him throughout the first half of the season. Note, he was happy to take Steele's place for a game at Wembley. Utterly selfish, like a toddler deprived of his favourite toy. Deserved all the opprobrium that came his way and missed out on what may be his only career opportunity to celebrate something special with team mates. What a tool. Fans being angry at his behaviour has no relationship to Chelsea fans having such a vile pop at Colwill for playing a full part at his loan club and appreciating the chance he feels he wasn't given at his parent club.

Not expecting Chelsea to want to sell Colwill, to us or anyone, but they do need to sell players as missing out on Europe will have a big impact on funds and FFP.

Best way to raise money is to sell off their academy trained players, of which Colwill is one. However he will be an U21 player next season so cannot be counted towards their home grown player number.

A lot of the players they will probably try to offload/need to sell (RLC, Mount, Gallagher, etc) are home grown players, so with Colwill's age and the fact he doesn't seem to want to sign a new deal, maybe it's better they cut their losses and keep a CB player like Chalobah who is homegrown. That way they are more likely to be able to register all their hyper talented 8-year mega bucks players.

*Edit* Sanchez is homegrown, which could help any potential deal.
The 'Homegrown Player' rule is a bit of a misnomer - really it should be the "Not homegrown player" rule, as its effect is to limit the number of "Not homegrown players" to a maximum of 17 out of 25 over-21 players who can be named in the PL squad, along with any number of u21s of any persuasion.

In practice, the many clubs don't actually name a full 25 overage players, e.g. at the start of this season: https://www.premierleague.com/news/2786707

Bournemouth - 25
Arsenal - 21
Villa - 24
Brentford - 23
Albion - 19  (of whom 9 were HGP, plus we named 64 under-21 players!!)
etc...

Remember, COUNTLESS posters wrote on here there is ‘no chance’ of us retaining Colwill. There always is / was. Never say never in football & remember for some it isn’t just £££ but also happiness…

Not a clue if he’ll sign or not but there’s certainly always been a chance…

Feels like there's actually something in this. Players and clubs know the importance of social media these days. Neither our club or this player seem remotely stupid so there's been a lot of surprising stuff by both parties over the last few months. Club knows posting things focussing on Colwill will excite our supporters and player knows giving any suggestion he cares more about us than Chelsea will rile their supporters.
Of course he's still there's, which is the big hurdle (plus, I'd fancy, a few of the 'big clubs' being interested) but there's very rarely no smoke without fire. I've gone from 'no chance' to 'hang on a minute...' in the last few weeks.

I dunno – the Albion admin just put out a '24 hours to go [until the Villa match]' tweet and it was up for a good five minutes before it got pulled

I'm pretty sure I suggested abandoning him in the wilderness to be raised by wolves rather than developing one of Chelsea's players for them.
I'll admit that I was wrong there.
I do maintain that getting into a position where we felt the need to borrow a player from Chelsea in the first place was a failing of an otherwise incredibly successful recruitment policy and team.

Mmmm I don’t agree. I imagine it was ‘part’ of the Cucu deal which is rare but was too good an opp to turn down… not like we’ve done many loads at all in recent times…

To be fair it was some brighton fan who triggered the horror on Twitter (as I understand it I try and stay off that cesspit)

Agreed. We seem to be able to find loads of talented midfielders from South America but not any defenders.
We used to have a surplus of CBs but most have gone on loan and not really made it to PL level.
JP Van Hecke seems the real deal.
Any other young players coming through?
