Don't get me started on NI as I will go on all night. Hate the Provo scum. UDA all the way.

It'd be an interesting change of topic, thats for sure. For reference, I'm from Ulster (but probably not by your definition), I'm half-protestant (and probably not your one either)... and realistically would prefer NI to stay in the UK for financial reasons.

Encouraged street drinking, outdoor parties, speakers on the street blarring out load music, drunk people stumbling along the curb about 6pm, people chucking their litter all over the place, BBQs on the Lawn bowling greens, gangs of people surrounding innocent members of public almosting forcing people to join in, in your face mimicking sexual acts, playing music from their phones, banging on shop windows and blowing whistles etc etc.
The police just sitting there watching it all unfold.

Sounds just like New Year's Eve in any town or city in the UK, or to a lesser extent, any Saturday night.

I saw at least one Albion fan conga-ing up St James's Street in his Skint shirt last night. I'm pretty sure from NSC that he's straight, but he appeared to be enjoying himself thoroughly.

Maybe some people think that because gays/lesbians/bis/trans are so woven into the fabric of the town that maybe Pride is no longer required - to such an extent - because it actually gives the remaining bigots fuel for their fire.

I laugh at the gay jibes we get at away games. To think that those idiots actually think we've never heard it before is hilarious. I am not offended if I am called gay, unless it is by my girlfriend, of course!

Pride is just too big now - simple as that. It used to be great fun, and it used to be about celebrating diversity and tolerance. As with all good things, it became too big and was diluted by people wanting to get hammered.

If people can't see the bigger picture and just want to swallow the prejudice rhetoric then good luck to them. As someone who lives and works in Brighton, I am surrounded by a significant gay population 365 days a year, because I choose to be. It does not bother me at all, because I have no problem with it i.e. I don't need to go to Pride to know that I am tolerant and respectful to others.

I don't need to be told that one day a year I have to embrace what is essentially now a money-making machine overridden with Londoners trashing the place, and then heading back to whence they came.

Were you on duty Edna? I found the best way to make my way through the crowd in St James's St last night was to follow right behind a policeman and a policewoman making their way up the street. People were getting out the way for them so I just followed.

Yeah, I was on St James's Street all night.

My role appeared to consist of walking up & down, smiling a lot, lending my hat to revellers, posing for a few photos and getting my arse pinched by random hands in the crowd

Cheers US.

I feel quite strongly about it, to be honest.

There's so much generalising going on regarding Pride.

"If you don't like, you're homophobic". What a load of old bollocks.

The majority of people at Pride yesterday will probably head back to their safe - and predominently straight - lives feeling really pleased with themselves.

Or perhaps I'm generalising.

I hate old bill as well. Wanker.

Is there anything you like? By the way, I'm a bit confused with your association with this board. You're from Ireland. Do you actually support the Albion or do you just come on here to spout your poisionous vitriol and annoy us?

Oh crap, I won't sleep tonight now.

Herman has been banned anyway. I think he may well be a reincarnation of someone else, not Watford O, who lost a battle every time he opened his mouth. The "No Surrender" shite has been trotted out on here before, as has the "UDA all the way" - not bad for someone who couldn't tell the difference between bakelite and armalite.

Not sure why the MODs only ban usernames and not IPs? All the idiots do is come back on with a throwaway email address and start all over again.

Not everyone has fixed IP addresses which means the same ip address can be used by several different people at various times, so if "a.n.other twat" comes on here and gets banned and you happen to get their ip address thats been banned on here then you cant get on the board

Yes, yes you are. Why shouldn't people head back to their predominantly straight lives feeling pleased with themselves? Tourism, conferences and the like are a big part of what makes this town. Outsiders come in, have a good time and spend their money.

Brighton holds a big party once a year managed by a large and vocal gay community. Out of towners of all sexual persuasions come down and remember this town for its tolerant, easy going and fun atmosphere, which is a credit to all us Brightonians. Something that should make us all proud that we're not like the Lewes NIMBYs.

Certain aspects of Pride are a little unpalatable (excuse the deliberate pun) such as the location being right next to the main road into town, I did feel a little awkward seeing children around stalls selling cock rings and dildos, the big fat Daddies in the bear tent is something I just can't get my head around (ooh matron) and the interminable cliche that is fat scouse drag acts belting out "I will survive" but let's not lose sight of the fact that tens of thousands of people went away having thought "wow, Brighton really is a great place".

Perhaps.

Brighton has a long history of louche beahviour - the original 'dirty weekend' destination, the 'theatrical population' etc, - and Pride is merely an extension of that tradition. However, without these people ('outsiders' as they're dismissively termed), Brighton would be another reactionary, small-town attitude place like many others - 'this is MY facking town' etc - and a damned sight more unpleasant place to live in.

When Pride started up, Brighton appeared a logical place to hold the protest, and there was a social political message to convey. It was a march, rather than a parade which served a purpose. I think that that argument, on the whole, has been won. However, these days, it's a carnival/party which, having read some on this thread, still needs to serve the same purpose.

But Brighton does need a party now and then. And Brighton as a whole does benefit.

Again I agree Doug about the respect and tolerance, but they are the minority in this town and I feel that they should show some respect to the majority and take their fight to all parts of the country. In my opinion they are losing the respect their previous parades have gained in this city.

In this context, name a group that ISN'T a minority.

I assume you feel you are talking on behalf of the 'majority' in saying that this carnival has no place in Brighton any more? Or are you suggesting that a vote needs to be taken across the city to see if the same carnival should be held each year?

Conferences and general tourism are completely different.

Look at my earlier post.

Of course I'm proud of my hometown. I show that by shopping in North Laine and bigging the place up at every opportunity, wherever I am in the world.

If you are advocating that "Out of towners of all sexual persuasions come down and remember this town for its tolerant, easy going and fun atmosphere, which is a credit to all us Brightonians" then the time has come for the event to change and be about being a Brightonian i.e. it isn't run entirely by the gay community, it is isn't advertised for out-of-towners and it is a local event where EVERYONE gets involved.

I can't stand it when people disrespect my town. I stayed in all day yesterday, as did my girlfriend - a fellow Brightonian - because it's just a bit too much now. I don't want to watch Guardian-reading straight people getting wankered and trashing the place that I call home.

I got so much crap when I used to go to Gay Pride ten years ago. My friend used to work for Stonewall and we'd have a great time.

Now, because it's 'cool' to be gay, and to be associated with gay people, it's alright.

I'm glad people enjoyed themselves. I just think the whole event has lost its ethos and got far too big for its boots.

Most boards ban Yahoo and Google adresses for that reason.

That's the point, it isn't.

Pride was about informing people that it's OK to be gay. Now, because it is so engrained in the town's make-up, it's not so relevant anymore.
