As I am a part time Meteorologist, the Southwick Weather Station is predicting one of the coldest winters for the last 15 years this Winter. The cooling trend is well established. Temperatures are well down on the figures we were getting last year which was the 2nd warmest winter in 400 years. We have had 3 frosts this week already recorded at the Southwick WS with the week low of - 1C, 30F recorded last night. Day maximums of around 8C 46F are below the average for this time of year at 11C 52F and the trend will continue.

I expect several periods this Winter of snowfall and expect a " substantial " snow event to occur with a fall of up to 6 inches.

I also think the likelhood of a White Xmas is the highest it has been for over 20 years. The cooling trend is established in the Northern Countries and Eastern Europe and they are getting very low temperatures at an early stage of Winter. Also the sea temparatures are well below last year and recent years after a dissapointing Summer and this means airflows from the European continent and the Northern Hemispheres do not heat up as much over the sea before they reach us.

I like the 6/1 on offer with William Hill for a White Xmas in London and the Aberdeen White Xmas is always good value and delivers regularly at good odds of 7/2.

That is all.

Post your Sussex snowfall pictures here to get in the mood.

Werent they prediciting Siberian temperatures last year which then turned out to be like a never ending Autumn?

Weathermen, even less reliable than an US racing tip :D

No doubt many will use this cold snap to argue negate the climate change theory.

Yes I remember that January snowfall, 1 inch melted by 12pm. I am talking about 6 inches lasting on the ground for a week.

Cool. I love snow. In january I was going down to the gym on the beach about 6 in the morning and the beach was covered in snow. Looked great. Totally untouched.

El Nino which affected the weather last winter has fecked off out of the way. I have been a studier of the weather for over 35 years and am excited about the trends this late autumn as it is very promising for a cold winter and a lot of snow

The weather is first established in continental europe and spreads West, this is just an example of what is happening in the East, when we get a block of very cold air from this area it is very difficult for the usual SW's to shift it, the very cold trend is well established at such an early stage, what we then need is an Eastern or Northern Easterly wind as those are the 2 directions that bring major snow to Brighton. Wait and see.

Way out west
You would have to agree that the comments about the see being cooler do point towards a colder winter as it normally has a warming effect on the wind reaching us, particularly from the near continent where winters tend to be somewhat colder than here. I have already had to scrape my car before going to work three times in the last week, I can only remember doing it a couple of times in the depths of last winter.

Slightly cooler than the 2nd WARMEST winter on record? It's Bound to snow in that case!

Find it strange you say the sea temperature is well below last year .... when we are fishing lately we are still catching virtually all of the summer species in good numbers and the winter species have not really showed up yet, whereas last year they seemed to arrive mid september .

Watchin the boats go by
This is all about high and low pressure. If you have been watching the pressure charts daily since the weather improved in late summer you would have noticed a big area of high pressure west of Ireland. Occasionally it has drifted directly over the UK but now it is back to the west of Ireland. The only route for low pressure now is round the top of the high , so bringing it to us from the north west or north, hence the cool weather. It will only warm up if that high moves south allowing low pressure to move in from west or south west.

You know I'm right
