Didnt somebody post over the weekend that there would be no news today as it is a public holiday in Spain so passport office not working or was it a joke and I am being thick.

If the spanish passport office is anything like there residencia office then god help him. i tried to get a residents permit when i lived over there. took bloody ages and never did get one. i was there for 2 years so I dont expect this to be a quick deal

If it was, I think that site would have listed it as a monday (when our boxing day bank holidays are moved to tuesdays, for instance, diaries and the like will list it as such).
Looking at wikipedia, it appears to be traditionally more like christmas day - the day children receive their presents, that is, though that is changing and kids get presents on both days (christmas and epiphany/The Day of Kings)! So it appears to be the date that is important, not the day of the week.

No wonder Spain is in such a mess with all those public holidays! I was speaking to a Spanish guy at my last company and he said that if they had a public holiday on say a Tuesday and a Friday they just end up taking the whole week.

When i was over there i used to do the same, not only did i get all of those public holidays i got 35 days annual leave. i was never at work
