Would many of the players mentioned a). make a difference to the current side and b). be happy to sit on the bench.

I think we need to look higher than Division One players and take experience to be competitive in The Champsionship.

There are some players tho, (a surprising number maybe), in League 1, that are capable of cutting it in higher divisions, and of course they come with lower transfer fees, come on, give the boys a chance to prove it.

I'm pretty sure people were saying stuff like that about about Barnes - "why are we signing a plymouth reserve" and Dicker "signed from a relegated club". Look at Crofts at Norwich this season, how many people on here said he wouldn't cut it in the championship? (it was quite a few)

Football doesn't work like that, most of Sheffield Wednesday's team were championship cast offs and they've been total dogshit this season. I'm not saying that every player mentioned will cut it in the championship but I'm sure quite alot will as part of decent team.

Boyd of Peterborough would be excellent. Shame that Exeter's Harley is not still up for grabs, class player. Someone said Vincelot of Daggers which is a good shout for goals from the back.

I'd rather the thread be Championship Players out of contract that we should sign

starting

Chris Burke Cardiff

I agree that we need to bring in some established Championship players to strengthen for next season.

However, I would also like to see us take some good young League 1 players for the Development Squad - then if/when they are thought to be ready for the Championship we should give them a run-out. Our biggest problem is the lack of investment in our youth set-up over many years, which means that every time we need a new player, it costs us.

Wright-Phillips looks like he thinks he should be playing at a higher level than he is, but I'm not sure he's enough of a team player (he does very little outside of the opposition penalty area) for the Championship. Jonnie Jackson likewise.

Of our players, I'd suggest Carl Jenkinson is the best option, but only if you require cover at full-back. He's as comfortable at right back as (his natural side) left, and is leaving in the summer having turned down an improved contract. Press reports have linked him to Arsenal and Man U, though I imagine if either comes off, as he's only 19 they will likely loan him out to a Championship side anyway. Poyet is presumably aware of him as he was only a couple of years ahead of his son in our academy system.

Boyd would cost a cool 2 mill in my opinion, CMS even more, be interesting to see what those 2 go for if Boro dont go up, CMS is defo off and i cant see Boyd staying for another season either in L1

N1A
Danny Green - Dagenham
Will Hoskins - Bristol Rovers
Mark Pugh - Bournemouth
Johnnie Jackson - Charlton
Romain Vincelot - Dagenham (scored 10 goals from defence)

.

They'd just be squad players, none of them would boost our squad up to a top half championship team IMO.

London now.
Interesting thread and reminds me of the time when we signed Mark Lawrenson and Gary Williams from Preston..... but I think our ambitions will be higher. Championship players you want to see in the Premier league with the Albion the season after next....

Danny Graham? How much would he cost? (and he was discovered by John Stephenson!)

On the gin tonight tho... ;-)

I think Posh will fall in the play offs and then Boyd will want out. He is the oustnding player in League 1 and, yes, I reckon we can afford him.

In the FA Cup, Watford and Portsmouth looked distinctly ordinary IMHO.
The Championship is physically much tougher and there are some good teams there but don't over-estimate the standard.

Totally agree.....i think the team we have now would have been quite comfortable in mid table in the championship this season, CMS, Hoskins and Boyd plus Lua Lua will help us to be more clinical in front of goal and not miss as many chance in order for us to be top 8. Obviously this wont happen but as mentioned if Boro dont go up be interesting to see where some of their players go.

Think Cotterell will have Portsmouth playing better next season and with their latest parachute money payment could be a force next season.

I agree with the first part but as to the second, isn't this already allocated, in large part at least, to pay creditors as part of the deal that kept them afloat? Criminal if not!
