Excellent stuff Ian, looking forward to Pt 2, it's amazing, I'd forgotten a lot of the crap he had to wade through to keep us alive.
Anyway, on a lighter note I'm still reeling from the comment he made to me at The Dripping Pan REMF game in 2011. As he was leaving I thought I'll go and shake his hand and thank him for saving the club, the conversation went like this,

Me wearing my Albion scarf, "Hello Dick, can I just say thankyou for all you've done for the club"

Dick Knight - " Marvellous, are you a Palace Fan ?"

WTF

Lost a lot of the love for Dick Knight over Mickey Adams second appointment, Dean Wilkins had done more than enough to keep the job in my opinion, his side improved over the season, and he deserved to be treated with more respect.

Still sad at the way relations between Dick and the club seem to have broken down. To recognise important history is not to 'live in the past`, otherwise museums wouldn't exist. But in the wider sense everyone has moved on, and that is how it should be.

Pretty much this really, although all true fans of the Albion will, or shoud, be eternally grateful for all of Dick's hard work, his time at the club has now come and gone.

In many ways supporting the Albion now, is akin to watching a whole different club to the one that existed in Dick's days at Withdean, and previously at the Goldstone. Watching the club in the Premier League at a brand new stadium has such a different feel about it.

So yes, it was largely Dick who made it possible for the Amex to be built, but without Tony Bloom's investment it would all still be pie in the sky. So if there ever is to be a bust outside the Amex, maybe it should be of Tony. Dick already has a bar named in his honour anyway.

Great again. Look forward to part 2.

Flowed much better this episode even though you struggled to get a word in edgeways.

And he was a better coach than Peter Taylor when he informed him that he wasn’t to change our systems and formations. Cocky git.
No wonder Taylor got out.

I raised an eyebrow or two at that as well, as much as we owe DK for what he’s done I’m not sure telling an ex England U21 coach not to tinker would have gone well!

Agreed, the Chairman should always stay out of the dressing room, and leave team affairs to his manager. However l have my doubts that Dick actually said that, a lot of poetic license needs to given to much of what comes out of his mouth.

Despite all our progress under Mr Bloom's tenure we must never forget that without Mr Knight and his cohorts, there would never have been a BHAFC for Mr Bloom to acquire.

I fully endorse the suggestion that we should have a statue of Mr Knight at the Amex but as there appears to be personal animosity between Messrs Knight and Bloom it seems unlikely to ever come to fruition. Which is a shame.

You are correct the current regime would not endorse a statue of Dick Knight at the stadium.

This is why I think crowdfunding and approaching the universities to ask them for permission for it to be on their land should be considered.

Dick is an honorary of UoB after all.

The other thing which I’m surprised no one has commented on, no mention of Martin Perry throughout both parts?

Probably to avoid either side being seen as taking sides/credit for Martin’s involvement exclusively given how much of a valuable and exhaustive servant he’s been to the club.

You COULD have brought him up in conversation, or was that flagged as a taboo subject before the interview?

After all I've read about him, this was the first time I watched him "in action". Bit different personality from what I expected. A little more "bite" than I would have guessed. Didnt he throw out BG from a fan meeting? More in tune now with the Dick Knight from the interview rather than the cotton hero I thought I had read about.

Have you read the Build a Bonfire book out of interest?

I think it is possibly very difficult to imagine what DK was like back then compared to now - especially given the obvious bitterness to how it ended and the stature of the club now. It's a different world these days.

Rumour has it that he was such a control freak that he told board members how many sugars they could have in their coffee during meetings  almost certainly an urban myth. Maybe this is the straw that broke the camel’s back with TB though :lolol:

Legend to me

I can quite easily believe that. Probably not an easy character to work for. It was either his way, or the high way.

Unlike half the Sussex top order I knew what the boundaries were...…

Given those boundaries though Ian, don't you feel your arms were tied when you couldn't ask the questions that probably you and everyone wants to know? And following on from Icy's post does he mention Martin Perry at any time in the interview, it did seem strange, or have I just got to wait?
And does everybody you interview give you a list of no go questions before you start, or is it just the more 'controversial' characters? I know they're not intended to be a Jeremy Paxman style grilling, but a more casual conversational kind of chat and I'm probably a bit naïve about these things as I've never been involved in any kind of journalism, but I am loving the interviews.

Not for me, can still remember Wilkins , White and Chapman scratching their heads on the touchline. The very definition of tin pot

Good interview.

DK is a legend !!
