This one seems like a free hit. If he arrives and is good, then we have 2 decent keepers competing for 1 spot. If he's shit then we've paid a relatively small sum for a bench keeper and Sanchez continues his starting role. Wages will be balanced out by Walton and Ryan leaving. But if our goalkeeping coaches have seen him play and think he can make the grade then I trust that.

Naylor says yes. "Expected to sign" for £4m.
Taller than Dan Burn is the fact that all commentators can now use for next season as he's 6ft 8 and "still growing" apparently.

"likely to be loaned out" is the news from Naylor though so next years keepers are still
Sanchez, Steele +1
Probably the most likely outcome.

I did a bit of math on it yesterday and I dont see how he would get a work permit without a year in Belgium first.
If we are loaning him out - and we may have to for a work permit - then it means we are signing 2 keepers this summer as it is pretty much certain both Ryan and Walton are leaving.

We still have Steele and McGill, as well as Sanchez, how many goalies do we need?

We need 3.

McGill may be ready, but I suspect he needs more league experience than 1 appearance for Crawley ???

Or this is why they might have used the option in Waltons contract?

Could see that being the case. Still possible to loan Walton somewhere if that is the case, as the emergency keeper rule would make it possible to bring him back if required.

Loan rules prevent the recall of any player except during the transfer window. The emergency goalkeeper rule would mean we'd be able to sign a goal keeper from another club on a rolling 1 week basis provided we had no professional goalkeepers available.

"Clubs will be able to recall a goalkeeper at 24 hours’ notice from a loan at another club if they are unable to field two fit goalkeepers in their 18-man matchday squad." I could be wrong/things could have changed though.

Where is that from as there is nothing in the Premier League rulebook that mentions that exception?

Edit - Those rules seem to be from the EFL website which only applies to Championship clubs and below. The PL have separate rules and don't seem to mention the ability to recall a goalkeeper outside of the transfer window. I'm sure I read before the PL don't really like to allow emergency goalkeepers, they refused Liverpool one a few seasons ago because one of their keepers was suspended rather than injured.

Hmm might be right as it is from the EFL ruleook:

55.1.5 Notwithstanding the provisions of Regulation 55.1.1, a Standard Loan of a goalkeeper (but not otherwise) may be subject to a recall clause exercisable at any time. Any recall may only be implemented:

(a) in extenuating circumstances and with the consent of The League, such extenuating circumstances to be determined in The League's absolute discretion; or

(b) where the Club seeking to exercise the recall has only one Professional Goalkeeper available (applying the criteria set out in Regulations 57.1.1 to 57.1.3 below). The recall will be subject to not less than 24 hours’ written notice.

A goalkeeper shall not be permitted to resume any Standard Loan following the exercise of a recall.

I edited my post above when I realised it was from the EFL rule book.

The emergency loan recall may exist for the PL, as I say it's not in any of their rule books I can see. But it could only be implemented in the very unlikely situation that Sanchez, Steele and Scherpen (if we sign him) are all injured at the same time. If one of them was fit then we'd not even be allowed to recall Walton to sit on the bench and would have to name McGill or another youngster as sub goalkeeper.

I always felt letting Ryan go out on loan last season and leaving us with three very inexperienced keepers, by PL standards, was a huge gamble. It paid off but I'd have dreaded a run of PL games with Steele in goal had Bob got injured or suspended.

I remember when Walton was recalled from Luton after Maenpaa's injury at Lincoln that it had to be in the transfer window.

That was EFL, I see no reason why the EPL would want to have a different rule.

The difference there was we still had Stockdale fit so had to complete the recall within the window. The emergency recall rules in the EFL only apply when you have no fit goalkeepers.

A €4-5 million fee raises the possibility that this could involve a swap for Jahanbakhsh.
