Anyone who joins our armed forces these days is either desperate for a job, mad, or a complete mug!

That is waaay off the mark. The British Empire was dashed against the rock that was Nazi Germany. We expended all of our wealth and colonial prestige in a life or death struggle against them. I say that for the Britsh empire to be destroyed in such a noble cause is almost justification for its existence at all. We came out victorious but exhausted. The infrastructure we needed to keep it all going was largely gone and the colonials had seen us humiliated by Germany and especially Japan in the early years of WW2. The soldiers from places like India Malaya, Burma etc. had fought for the British and when the fighting was done...they rightly demanded repayment in terms if independence from Britain and self determination.

Contrast this with France who indulged in ten years of bloody struggle and suppression to retain their colonies, Vietnam if a particularly pertinent example. France resorted to recruiting SS soldiers from the einsatzgruppen and Das Reich divisions to murder the Viet Minh and burn out the insurgents. The massacres and atrocities led to the US involvement in the conflict when France was literally thrown out.

In point of fact (with the exception of the partition of India) the former possessions of Britain were handed back with dignity and respect. The survival of the Empires fraternity still exists as the commonwealth. If we murdered our way out we wouldnt have those friendly relationships now would we? Your opinion, whilst encouraged, is patently borne out of complete ignorance of the facts.

To say that anyone who joins the Army is either desperate or a mug says an awful lot about you.

No it is not only about now. The comments related to the guy saying if people wanted to fight, they should join the forces.

My Grandfather, father myself and my sons have all served or are currently serving and none of the above applies to any of us , we done it through a sense of duty towards our country.

Nobody punched Ray Wilkins as I remember it. It was directly in front of me and Ray Wilkins was the subject of a lot of `friendly` banter that he took very well and openly laughed at some of it. The fans that got on the pitch picked him up and put him on his arse, which although it was a stupid thing to do, it wasn`t really violent and he definitely wasn`t punched.

This is correct. The video evidence was inreliable because it was telephoto lens and it compressed the distances. The nutter just swung his arms wildly. Did Wilkins punch him? I can't remember or could not see. I would not have blamed him.

The Police did not eject the nutter at first. They tried to put him back in the crowd, but then he got punched, so he was ejected for his own safety.

This was just not a normal idiot. He was off his tree.

Oh, and why am I ignorant for not liking the fact that our armed forces are now used as the world's policemen? As I have said, I have nothing but respect for our armed forces - but why would anyone join them these days? When is kicks off over the Falklands again, then it will be "our war", but we walked out of Afganistan, and should have stayed out. Using anything but air and special forces was always going to result in us taking heavy casualties. Just like every other invader has, including us, and the Soviet Union.

My point is that soldiers dont get to decide where they go and fight and die they go where they are asked to by Her Majesty the Queeen and do their duty.

To call them mugs and idiots etc. is both disrepectul, ignorant and brainless. Even more so when you consider the horrendous toll in lives and limbs that this engagement has cost our soldiers. Their bravery and dedicatipon to their Queen and their comrades has been breathtaking and quite humbling.

You have noted my point. I totally agree with your comments about the sacrifise of the individuals. You have conveniently missed my other catagory of those who join, knowing where they will be sent, of "mad". I know a number of my sons' friends who have actually joined up fall squarely in that catagory, but sadly others, are the ones desperate for jobs.

One of my wife's best friends is a junior school teacher, she joined the RAF Regiment TA, in the belief that she would only be asked to fight in an emergency, for something vital to this country. She was mobilised and sent on tour to Iraq. What is the point of that, when her pupils education was interupted in her absense?

She was mobilised and sent on tour to Iraq. What is the point of that, when her pupils education was interupted in her absense?

If she joined the RAF in the belief that she would only be called on in an emergency means that she didnt read the small print. You might have noticed that Government cuts to the forces means an increased reliance on the TA to fight AND do all the other rear eshelon stuff.

Look at it this way. She is in Iraq seeing things that very few people have seen first hand...when she gets back I'll wager she will be a better teacher with more personal experiences to help shape her pupils minds.

Just to clarify, my "mad" refered to "enjoy looking for a fight" type mad, and not "stupid" type mad. Clearly they come into the third group.

What other reason would there be for joining up to go to Afganistan?

Clearly it was in the "small print", but it is only over the last few years when Blair slashed the forces, and looked for wars, that they were used as front line forces. They only ever used to be used if they had specialist skills that were needed, and then, I understand, after special permission had been obtained to mobilise them.

Do you really think she would be allowed to tell young children what she was out there? Needless to say she resign and is happy just being a teacher.
