KERRY MAYO TESTIMONIAL : Re-scheduled to July 2006

Robert Lester Zamora said:
Let's just say that in one of the interviews in the forthcoming testimonial brochure Kerry muses over his future options after football, and one possibility is that he may become a tiler.

I think this says it all really.

As some have pointed out Kerry may well NOW be one of the clubs bigger earners, but that doesn't mean by any means that he is loaded or even well off.

His career as a professional footballer will only last another 5 years or so. His earnings will go down over that time too. Regardless of how much you perceive he has been paid by the club over the 10 years that he's been playing you neglect to mention that in that time he will have paid tax, NI and have had the usual outgoings just like everyone else. There are without doubt people that post on here that have earnt more money than Kerry over the last 10 years. So why not reward him for his service, the pleasure he has given many over the years, and to give him a boost for when his earnings will be drastically reduced?

Your argument that his reward should be that he's been a professional footballer and lived the dream of many fans is utter f***ing rubbish. He deserves the reward if nothing else for the hard work and dedication he has put in for this club.

I know this thread's moved on a bit from the actual rescheduling but I'd just like to say....YEEEEES!!!! I will now not miss the bloody thing.

As for Kerry deserving or otherwise the financial reward...he's got on with the job consistently for some years, come back after being dropped, changed positions (remember when he used to play in midfield occasionally?) and improved his football when he had to as we moved up the divisions. He's not caused any controversy, generally been a decent ambassador for the club and, I strongly suspect, certainly not earned enough to sit on his arse for the rest of his life.

I have no problem with shelling out a few quid on his behalf - we WILL be getting entertained into the bargain aswell, remember - it's not like we're just being asked to drop money into a bucket.

Kerry is a legend and would bleed blue and white blood for the club. Sure he has been priveliged to be a profesional footballer but he has spent most of his career in the bottom two divisions. His profesional career may only last 15 years, so he will need a job post football. Its only the best players in the top division that get set-up for life. A testamonial is becoming a rare thing these days as loyalty disapears from the game. Kerry has well and truely earned his as far as I'm concerned, and I will be more than happy to pay my money to go to the game and buy the brochure.

I'm sorry, not in fact i'm not. What the hell are some of you idiots saying?!!

Kerry Mayo is our longest serving players. He has been with us through thick, think and thinner. He is certainly not a rich Permiership star and his salary is comparable to many on this board. The difference is that Kerry is only 27 years old, may be nearing the end of his football career (McGhee has already stated that he thinks he can get "one more year out of Kerry playing at this level"). I fully expect that if we stay up he will be let go next year.

Kerry we either have the choice of uprooting home to play for another team for a minimal wage or finding another job. And believe me, he WILL need another job - he has not earned enough in his football career to be out of work for any period of time.

This is why we have testimonials - it is like the lump sum that many receive when they retire from work - to help Kerry through the future and his long life after football. This money will have to last him a life time.

I agree that players who earn £100k a week such a Ryan Giggs don't need a terstimonial - but Kerry doesn't even earn anything like this in a year! Even so, i don't believe Ryan Giggs gave anything to charity - few do!

Kerry does not owe this club anything. It is us that owe him. Loyalty is rare in football these days. He deserves everything he gets and i for one plan to support him in any way we can.

The club loses nothing from this. All expenses are paid and Kerry keeps the profits whatever they may be. We get a night of fantastic entertainment and get an opportunity to witness sights we wouldn't otherwise see such as Ward and Zamora up front together!

Please please get behind Kerry. There are no losers - everyone is a winner. And if anyone deserves a good testimonial year it is Kerry Mayo.

How do you plan to stage the testimonial in July when we are normally lacking the South Stand at this time!

The reason that we don't play any home pre-season friendlies is because the South Stand seats don't return until just before the start of the season.

thats a bloody good point! are they gonna let us STAND for once?!

Then don't f***ing go - let someone who wants to recognise what he has achived pay their money.

How well paid do you think Kerry Mayo has been? Most of his career has been in the bottom 2 divisions of the Football League with (I imagine) bottom division wages to match.

They're not all Millionaires and probably earn less than we all think.

Personally, I think Kerry Mayo is WELL deserving of a testimonial. He's played for this club for 10 years and has been a loyal servant through the most horrendous times the club has seen.

He's battled back from being out of favour a number of times and that takes a lot of bottle.

I hope he makes a f***ing MINT out of his testimonial and I for one will be contributing.

I thank you

Blimmin' well said. A testimonial is to show personal appreciation for a player, regardless of the state we're in now or in the future.

Wasn't it Niall Quinn who had a testimonial and instead of presenting the players with a 'thank you for turning up' gold watch a la Dennis Wise, he gave them all a certificate saying he'd donated their 'fee' to each supporting a child in Africa? And didn't the rest of his money go to a local hospital?

I remember that restoring my faith in testimonials for Premiership stars.

Okay, MY turn to be pedantic. He lives in a completely seperate TOWN to your good self (one being infinately more desirable than the other). :)
And now I'll be pedantic - which I suppose is preferable to my first instinct, which is to target a rant at Richie Morris.

He lives in the same town as Yorkie.

Hear, hear!

Kerry is a legend. End of.

Hope he gets enough out of his testimonial year to ensure that he doesn't struggle for money for the rest of his life like loads of ex-footballers do. He has been the most loyal servant of this club in all the time I've been watching them, and could have curled up and given up on many occasions, but just keeps proving people wrong.

I've read some poop in my time but some of this that I have just read takes the ULTIMATE biscuit.

I really dont know where you get your ideas from about the club and players.

Endorsments? Free cars? Are you being serious?!!!!! The players dont get any sort of sponsored cars, even complimentry tickets arent really for free cos they get taxed on them. Freebies dont exist unless you are a high profile name.

Been lucky enough to play professional football??????? Wake up, it takes hard work, dedication and sacrifice, and its more down to talent than luck.

You go on about Dan Harding not having any loyalty for being lured away by big money etc but then when someone like Kerry who is entitled to a testimonial for his commitment to the club for many years, you say he doesnt deserves it cos he earns too much?????? If only you knew.

There really is no pleasing some people.

Agree with you Race. It's not the easiest of lives and does involve dedication and sacrifice especially at lower level. I do think that a lot of the top players are overpaid but unfortunately a squad player at York can't do anything about that and he's still a pro player people sem to think will live a life of luxury

I agree that MOST top players are more than over paid for what they do! I can understand that a lot of people believe most players earn a fortune and never have to work again, but in reality most just earn a living, and dont have mansions and top of the range cars!

I watched Footballers Cribs the other night and both me and Tank just sat there with gobs wide open at Ashley Ward's home and lifestyle! Ididnt even think he was that well known for a start! Its a totally different world!

In short, I think that Kerry's reward is that he has been a professional footballer for ten years, playing at a good standard and being paid well to live a life the fans can only dream of

1. Bollocks he does, Morris.
And that's a fact.

2. He doesn't live in Peacehaven.
And that's a fact too.

Well said. Some truly unbelievable comments on this thread, I hope Kerry doesn't read NSC. I also hope he makes a mint from his testamonial.
