Rougvie has prett much articulated what I meant better.

Mayo has been paid very well for the job he does and I would imagine far better then he would have got if he were not lucky enough to be a footballer.

Even if he only earns 1k a week that is 52k a year which means he has made about half a million out of the club. Not bad in my book and I would expect it to be more in recent years after Dick Knight rewarded players with improved contracts following our previous promotion to this division.

I congratulate what Kerry has done and have nothing but admiration for what he has achieved here but long gone are the days when low paid players needed a big pay day to secure their long term financial security.

Brighton and Hove Albion as a club however is not in that luxurious position. We need every single penny we can get.

I am all for letting Kerry, especially as one of our more unsung heroes, have an evening where he takes centre stage but what I am suggesting is that any profit made is put into the Alive and Kicking appeal.

Then he would be an even bigger legend.

Suggest it to him then Richie instead of airing it on Nsc,

Footballers have a short earning career . That is the whole purpose of a testimonial, to reward them and give them something to invest.

He lives near me and the houses around here are cheap compared to Brighton and surrounding area prices.

I hope people do not think I am having a pop at Kerry.

I am merely raising the question as to whether footballers need a big pay day like this anymore. They certainly are not as hard up as they were in the past.

The question is even more pressing at a club like Brighton who are ridiculously short of money.

Yorkie, I would suggest it to him but do not know how.

Even making a contribution from the proceeds to Alive and Kicking would be very admirable.

!

Am I hearing all this correctly? We are talking about Kerry Mayo here not Thierry Henry. Kerry will have been well paid by OUR standards for the last 6 or so years, but before that I reckon there are probably people on this board that were earning more than him a year.

Besides which, can I point out that Kerry's football career is limited, it will end by the time he's about 35 and may end at any time. He may well do very well after football, he may not. In case he doesn't I will be contributing in his testimonial year.

And as for the quoted half a million pounds (earnt from the club), have a think about how much money you will earn in 10 years in a very well paid job. The figures are probably comparable. If you get that decently paid job will you be paying any boius money back?

Sorry, but I really think this kind of talk is WAY off the mark. Let's all support Kerry's testimonial year as a bonus for his committment and loyalty - something so often demanded, but now expected for nothing?!

In short, I think that Kerry's reward is that he has been a professional footballer for ten years, playing at a good standard and being paid well to live a life the fans can only dream of.

That is not the same thing. I expect Kerry has also got good bonus money for clean sheets and promotions. He is more then entitled to that.

Also, if I work in a well paid job for ten years I do not expected a massive event planned as a fund raiser for me when I leave. The reward for having the job would be the job itself.

Loyalty? Who has tried to tempt the ginger prince away from Withdean then?

I don't think it looks like you're having a pop at Kerry at all, I just think you are wrong about how much someone like Kerry has earnt from the club. I think with modern football wages he's probably been earning very well by OUR standards, but by Premiership standards I think he's probably on peanuts.

We should definitely be questioning whether Premiership footballers need testimonials!

That isnt really the point is it.

I was asking a sensible question about the funding for this game.

I dont mind paying £20 for Kerry Mayo but I do mind if the club have to foot the bill for the game.

The club will not be footing the costs of this game (e.g. Policing, Stewarding, Park 'n' Ride; Stadium etc..) - costs will be paid for by the "Kerry Mayo Testimonial Fund"

But if he earns £4k a month he takes home approx. £2.8k a month. Many people earn far more than that AND will continue until the retire at between 50-65. Kerry will have to find new employment when he retires from football he probably will not walk into another job.

For a footballer these days to stay at the same club for 10 years is highly commendable and he deserves his testimonial and keep the money.

How do you plan to stage the testimonial in July when we are normally lacking the South Stand at this time!

The reason that we don't play any home pre-season friendlies is because the South Stand seats don't return until just before the start of the season.

The South Stand will not be going on it's holidays next summer - this was found out tonight when we met with the club to discuss options.

It's not about the event, it's about the money. And your future employers will delighted that you expect no extra reward for doing a job well or for a very long time. In most businesses, bonuses and rewards are offered for both.

As for Kerry's loyalty, Real may not have been knocking on the door, but I would think that when the owners of the club you play for are hated by the fans, selling your place of work, plunging the club into a financial mess which threatens it's existence - your employment - and have failed to pay you on more than one occasion (Etc, etc), then I would guess your loyalty has a great value.

Let's just say that in one of the interviews in the forthcoming testimonial brochure Kerry muses over his future options after football, and one possibility is that he may become a tiler.

When is the brochure out ?

Any chance of recreating the old days and playing Sussex CCC at football and cricket ?

Okay, MY turn to be pedantic. He lives in a completely seperate TOWN to your good self (one being infinately more desirable than the other). :)

Personally I say good luck to the bloke. Anyone that has managed to survive the Bellotti and Archer days, through Gillingham to be a major part of our more recent successes deserves all the praise/cash that comes his way.
