I am looking at Kenya for my honeymoon next year. Has anybody on here been there? I am a bit worried as it is a third world country but mombassa does look bloody gorgeous. Just dont want to be raped by a lion or anything cheers

A friend and his wife have just come back from a very reasonable beach holiday in Kenya. He has been there quite a few times as his dad is a pilot (and so is he now). Ben (the friend ) has just moved to Singapore, but I can get you some in depth information if you wish - may take a while...!

115 people died from hippo attacks in 2008. 16 of them were new brides.
They just don't have the regulations.

...and one groom. :desperatelysearchesforTHATthread:

Hungry Hippoes lulled people into a false sense of security. They are beasts and they WILL kill you gibbon half (or less than) the chance.

Maybe i will go without the bride then! On a serious note it is really cheap compared to places like the carribean but maybe it's because of the risk of hippo's.

I started my Honeymoon in Kenya (Amboseli National Park), but spent most of the honeymoon on safari at various game reserves in Tanzania. I was told at the time that the Tanzanian parks are slightly more 'natural' than those in Kenya.

I would thoroughly recommend Tanzania as a honeymoon location - Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most spectacular places on this planet.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most spectacular places on this planet.

Second that, easily inside the top ten places I have visited, the night before we went there was spent at a place called Mto Wambu...which translates roughly as mosquito river...probably best avoided if you aren't keen on insects!

The comments about Tanzania are pretty much spot on, I found it far friendlier than Kenya...which has had its share of politically inspired violence of late...maybe combine Tanzanian game drives and a beach holiday in Zanzibar, which I hear is absolutely amazing.

Barrel of Fun - that's bloody hilarious

Deanbha - went there last yr and happy to answer any questions. We went to Amboseli, Tsavo East and Tsavo West national parks in mid-June (just after rainy season). Would seriously advise kenya safaris, safari to kenya definitely if you can stay at Satao Camp. July/August would be awesome in terms of the animals on view.

Spent one week on coast at great and very quiet place called Pinewood Village http://www.pinewood-village.com/

It was several miles south of Diani Beach (45 min drive south of Mombassa) which is very congested with hotels

Great reply thank you. The beach area sounds good to me and then maybe venture into the national parks and get best of both worlds.

kenya is beautiful.

we spent a long weekend in nairobi and then flew out to the masai mara for a safari, then back to mombassa for a twin centre beach holiday. great place. we stayed in two resorts one north and one south of mombassa, both excellent. highly recommended, not cheap!

Can't remember if I've told this story here before...

I went on honeymoon in Mombassa a couple of years ago. Wife and I got onto coach for transfer to hotel and the tour guide, a local Kenyan man, introduced himself as 'Peter'.

'I'm a very big fan of English football,' said Peter over the PA system. 'My assistant here, John - he supports Arsenal. Today's driver is Sam, and supports Manchester United. But I support the greatest football team in the world... Brighton and Hove Albion!'

My wife was, like, WTF?!

In truth, he didn't seem to know much about the club/current squad. I think he'd just seen the 1983 FA Cup final.

Anyway... it's hard to rate Mombassa. You can't really explore it by yourself, so it depends on your hotel. I've seen much better beaches, tbh.

We spent a lot of time on safari (Tsavo East and West, and the Mara), including two days at Mara Bushtops which was *f***ing amazing*.

Same here..!

I thought Nairobi was a total shit pit, and and an unsafe one at that..
Only good thing about it is the restaurant Carnivore :slurp:

Kenya is still quite Tribal and feels angry about it, wherea's Tanzania is predominantly Christian, with a King/Queen head of state, and feels more calm because of it..

We done Safari (N'gorongoro and Lake Manyara Tree Lodge) climbed Kili (not the easy Cocoa-cola way) and then zanzibar..

It is the f***ing nuts - plan it yourself and save loads - if you want any pointers, gissa shout.

Not sure how you will travel around, but I returned to Nairobi by train from Mombassa...it is very slow, but generally safer than the roads, might have been something like 15 hours...went for a first class sleeper, which isn't much more expensive than second (don't even think about third)...waking up and opening the curtains to see zebra outside was pretty amazing.

Nairobi is a bit on the dodgy side, I was advised to take a taxi at night when going anywhere...even between bars a couple of hundred metres apart...Carnivore is also very good, if you go there be warned that they will try to fill you up on stuff like chicken before bringing the game around...pass on that to leave enough room for things like ostrich, crocodile and zebra.

Bset to split the honeymoon between the beach resort complexes around Mombasa and the Safari hotels inland. I've stayed at the Whitesands Beach Hotel in Mombasa and had a good time. Just depends on whether you want to go down the all organised for you route, or arrange it all yourself on the internet. Its one of the safer African countries i've been in, but you still have to take real care especially at night when in Mombasa or Nairobi.
