Genuinely interested where you got this data from, given it claims “approximately 50% of farms are under 50 acres” ?? I find that hard to believe.

50 acres is about the size of one reasonably-sized / small field. In summers past I’ve worked the harvest for local farms and just one decent wheat or barley field is 80-90 acres, which takes maybe an afternoon to combine and bale. No way is a a viable, commercial farm 50 acres?

Bullshit figures

2.47 acres to a hectare. Do you really think I would have replied to @dsr-burnley's first post without checking
I’ve no idea what you’ve checked or not checked.

But you stated above that 50% of farms are 50 acres or less. If you really believe half of UK farms are about the same size as 25 football pitches then fair enough - but it feels like you don’t fully understand the topic.

To be fair, I was a little surprised, but those are the facts

according to the internet an acre is 'roughly the same size as a football field'. So more like 50 football fields. Which doesn't seem way out to me.

Despite living in rural Somerset, surrounded by farmland, I actually didn't realise farmers previously had such amazingly generous inheritance tax concessions. I don't believe farming is remotely an easy occupation - but I'm not sure why farmers should be treated differently to others who build up wealth through hard work, etc. Perhaps I'm missing something?

Are they the facts though?

The data in the link you posted gives all figures as hectares - yet in your post you have detailed them as acres? Unless I’m missing something.

I don't think Watford zero understands polite queries about numbers. Now, if you swore violently and abusively, you'd be talking his language.

I think, having skimmed those, that the discrepancy might come from this link that you quoted (https://www.gov.uk/government/stati...-regional-profiles/agricultural-facts-summary) giving ~39% of farms being under 20ha (50acres) refering to England alone, while the other websites that state "about 50% of farms are under 50acres" refer to the whole UK.

Apparently in 2016, over half of the holdings in Scotland were under 10ha: https://www.gov.scot/publications/e...sh-agriculture-2016/pages/8/?origin=serp_auto

That would makes more sense. Loads of crofts in Scotland that are little more than a few head of sheep and subsistence crops.

A ‘farm’ of 50 acres or less is essentially a field.

So 50% <50 acres in the UK is hard to believe, but 40% <50 acres in England makes sense?

It is interesting (aside from whatever argument this originally stemmed from, I skipped that bit of the thread and don't really care), that even in England over 10% of farms are under 5ha, so less than 12.3acres.

Well, no it doesn’t. I was just referring to the Scotland bit to be honest.

I’ve given up the will to live on the rest of it. It looks to me like a confusion has been drawn between acres and hectares but I’m even beginning to bore myself.

Just for context, you can combine 50 acres of wheat in less than a morning. That doesn’t sound like a farm to me.
