Keeper HOOFING it

How many others were watching England last night and imploring Joe Hart to gently stroke the ball out to Ashley Cole, or Glen Johnson, who were often stood in acres of space while Joe was hoofing it down field.

The ball would invariably be won by the Italian defenders and another attack would build against us.

Thank you Gus, I honestly sit there and watch football very differently for the education you have provided us. Possession is a wonderful thing, and as we've shown, defenders can do it, because actually they are regularly in ACRES of space, and as soon as a midfielder comes to close them down, then that should be leaving space for a pass to Bridcutt, or Sparrow. If Brighton can do it, it seems strange to watch such highly paid STARS unable to do it, or perhaps not even thinking of trying it.

I agree. I haven't seen loads of Man City, but I assume they build from the back, as they're a good team without a really big player up front. Therefore, I can only assume that he was under orders to go long to Welbeck and then Carroll.

It's the English brand of possession football, no?

Pass it around a bit (mainly in defence) until you're under pressure, then pass itback to the keeper who lumps it forward towards a striker

100% this. Hart - Hoof - Italians build from the back and are bearing down on our goal within seconds of Hart's Hoof. Ball ends up in Hart's hands - Hoof - Italians build from the back and are bearing down on our goal within seconds of Hart's Hoof for another go etc.

Not just the Joe Hart hoofing it - England tried taking a free kick quickly in the second half - attempted a 50 yard cross field ball which went straight to Italian defender. We were dreadful after first 20 mins. we've got to learn to keep the ball.

I was thinking the exact same thing when watching the game particularly as our possession was so poor. Playing it out and across the back 4 would have given us a bit more possession and allowed us to build some attacks rather than chasing the Italians all over the park and getting nowhere near the ball.

Yep, thought the same thing myself last night. Just shows, these are the top English footballers and they can't pass and control the ball. Next time I moan about a Brighton player misplacing a pass or failing to control the ball, I will think of England before saying anything!

And Hodgson just sat there with his bad suit and big watch looking bemused, as if any attempt to alter our tactics/formation was nothing to do with him and he was just a paying spectator.

Yep, I was SCREAMING at Hart to stop hoofing it. He looked absolutely clueless with the ball at his feet so maybe not a good idea for him to try and stroke it about though. He had trouble just clearing from a back pass, so we'd have probably had a Brez moment from the Spurs friendly game if he'd tried.

But I didn't really see any of the "pass it around" bit prior to the roll back and HOOF. The thing I found myself saying was "but you're not under pressure" when Hart hoofed it. I'm so used to Brez or Casper just controlling it, and then rolling a pass to Calde or Mattock, or to a CB, perhaps Bridcutt coming deep, that when a keeper lumps it, I'm expecting to see the opposition have push up closing everyone down. Time after time our full backs were in ACRES when we did this, and we badly needed to just hold onto the ball, take a breather, and delay the next attack.

I didn't need a reminder, but last night was one .... of what a radical job Gus has done here. He has taught us a whole new philosophy, and I love it!

I don't recall Hodgson's Fulham doing it when they finished 7th and got to the Europa league final either. So where the f*** did it come from? Very odd.

We looked the most dangerous when we were playing it along the ground and running at their defenders, when Carroll came on and Hart started hoofing it up to him spelled the end of the game for us.

Apparently Hart to Carroll was the best pass completion for England during the game, though.

It was a very painful couple of hours, I didn't enjoy it at all, and although I'm disappointed we're out, I was slightly relieved to be put out of my misery.

It always strikes me as odd that defenders spend an age keeping possession, then pass to the keeper who lumps it up the field. The player with the ball in the movement initially could probably do the same thing from further upfield.98 passes in possession ,then BANG,up the field to the other side.

So,yes, thank heavens for our manager who has tried to cut this out (and to several other managers who share his views)

Could Mr Blatter not have this nonsense stopped ?

2nd half was a joke, every time and England player got the ball they just hoofed it long and returned possession to Italy and we were defending again. If only Gus was there to sort it out.

Been saying exactly the same things during all the England games at Euro 2012 - if we can do it at Brighton why can't England do it?!

I guess from Hodgson's point of view he has to get a group of players from different clubs who each have slightly different philosophies to all adopt a single consistent philosophy when playing for England and in the time available he went for a very rudimentary, back to basics approach (although it seems that is his general default position anyway!) Hopefully this will signal the long awaited and much promised root and branch rethink in how we teach and play football in this country but I won't be holding my breath!

Maybe Brendan Rodgers appointment at Liverpool might be a good thing for English football generally?
