Keep Harty Get Rid Of Ward Thread

I think the main thing here is that Ward has only been with us 2 bloody seasons and as he admits has nothing previous. What really pisses me off is that he is now the voice of the fans, he writes utter garbage, and is writing columns for us which should be left to the experts!

HARTY MUST STAY!

I enjoyed the book and found it funny.

I have spoken to him and he is great to talk to.

Although I seem to remember Ian Hart, who was kindly drawing the half-time REMF raffle, making comments along the lines of "it doesn't get any better than this" during some of the "less-attractive" prizes, so I don't think we can be too precious about this.

That's just Harty's style, and in fact historically the archetypal Albion style. Everything done with a slightly amateurish low-budget edge, something which continues to this day. In a way a very endearing character in todays over commercialised sterile football world. If anyone thought it was genuinely a snide remark at the quality of the "less-attractive" prizes and not a duff attempt at comic relief they do not know him. And I'm sure the same can be said for Wards comment.

The difference however is that most people would forgive Harty over Ward in the same circumstances because of the nature and length of Ian's involvement with the Albion.

In terms of writing, Mike Wards slick and polished delivery is more indicative of the mainstream, commerical, flawless, checked and double checked writing that glossy mags think is trendy and funny. It smacks of being done more as a job than a lifelong passion and not unexpectedly that turns some fans off him.

I think some of the comments on this thread reflect that and in addition a silent accusation that the new boy simply isn't one of us or shared what we've shared down the years. Like the old Vietnam accusation, "you weren't there man !".

That's exactly how I took both comments. I agree with your other points too.

Save our Hart!

Keep the Hart in the Argus!

Hart has soul!

Ok so I do heart cliches. It's not a problem, I can handle it.

Yeah but Harty is Harty, and we all know and trust him. Ward however has been here 5 minutes, and thinks he is the voice of the fans. He thinks he has the right to take the mick out of the something a lot of people have worked very hard for.

I strongly believe you do not swap the team you have followed all your life. Ward is a Gooner, not an Albion fan in my mind.

I was very disappointed in "Gullhanger", but if the Argus choose to let him write a column in their paper, I will do what I always do with Ms Swallow's article...............ie ignore it, because its crap

Ah I didn't see that.

But, surely this column is supposed to be written by a lifelong Albion fan?

On NSC there are lots of very talented and funny writers who could do a great weekly column.

Have you never told someone you loved them - and truly believed that you were going to be with them forever - only to bin them later - perhaps you didn't enjoy being with them anymore, or you moved away, or because someone better came along?

Some people stay with their first loves the rest of their lives, but I don't blame people for changing their minds.

Fascinating ethical can of worms you've opened up there, Lush (sorry!). It is less socially acceptable to change your football team than your partner? Comments from the floor, please.

Yes I have indeed said that. However my love for the Albion is different and unlike past romantic interests, past music tastes, past fashion tastes, past penchants for certain meals, etc, etc. has remained. I concede things change, it is just that to change to a different side is an alien concept to most of us. The emotion at Hereford was a unique experience in unpleasant, uncomfortable and uneasy circumstances. I ponder the option of missing it because I had changed to another team as the Albion slid down the leagues, I'm still glad I stuck with my first love (as you put it).
