The guy doing the Pentagon briefing just had to get the bit in about the American military being the best in the world - at this point I don't really think anybody cares about that

Defense secretary briefed Pelosi and Schumer on Afghanistan today

From CNN's Ryan Nobles

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was briefed on the situation in Afghanistan by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin by phone today, her spokesperson Drew Hammill tells CNN.*

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also been briefed by the defense secretary on the situation, according to a statement from his office.

“I strongly condemn this act of terrorism and it must be clear to the world that the terrorists who perpetrated this will be sought and brought to justice,"*Schumer*said in the statement.*

This is how the US will most probably return, special forces... IMO

Will the Americans be holding a seance? Only in America would people imagine it possible to bring suicide bombers to justice.

I don't follow working class media (or anything much, other than the BBC) but I am morbidly fascinated by how all this jive is going down with the great American electorate (Zebulon and Goody Doris Bonkers).

Never going to happen.

They just want to get as many people safely out, and get themselves out, in the next few days.

You do wonder how the last flight (or few flights) get out safely because as soon as the troops securing the airport get on a plane to get the hell out of there, there's no-one left to ensure that plane(s) gets off the ground.

It's quite possible that some kind of deal has been done with the Taliban to secure the exit of the last few flights.

As I understand it, the Taliban are actually outside the airport at the moment trying to keep order and there was reports this morning of them warning people to leave the area and trying to clear it following intelligence an attack was imminent.

The attack this morning was by ISIS, not the Taliban as far as I'm aware.

The BBC noted that a page on the Republican Party's official website praising Donald Trump's negotiations and final deal to withdraw from Afghanistan as a resounding success.....has been quietly removed without comment.

Fancy that. Still....extreme left wingers, though. Let's not forget that they . . . . and whatabout . . . .

I see the US faithful will always believe what they're told from anyone who comes across as a great oratory speaker.
The media plays a big part in this, and the Yankee Doodle flag waving yahoo's will always BELIEVE.

The fact that this has happened a fortnight before the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks will not be lost on a lot of Americans

The most curious thing..
My money's on US spooks. Timing's just too perfect. Western media all warn in inison about it all morning (UK time) then surprise surprise it comes to pass an hour or two later. Sorry, but I I just don't believe in that uncannily accurate level of prediction. If you ever wanted an excuse to clear the perimeter of an airport under siege on the other hand...
I somehow don't think so....

Most welcomed Biden after the Trump fiasco , but didnt take him long to make a monumental bungle and get blood on his hands , all US presidents since Kennedy have been absolute Pants ,
and yet they still manage to elect an even worse one every time ! (apart from the one that followed Nixon !,) and he was another mega-clown

I am not supporting the Taliban but what people forget is that when they came to power they were seen by many Afghans as a reasonable, stabilising force who cleared up the anarchy left behind after the Russian evacuation. The country had descended in anarchy as warlords ran their own little fiefdoms much like 1th -13th century England and in that period women were not safe from torture, rape, being made slaves etc. Checkpoints were set up , money was taken and people killed if they objected being 'taxed'. I would also point out that some European Russian soldiers killed themselves rather than be captured and tortured (flayed alive).

There is a large disparity across the country many parts are very backward and women have never had fair treatment, the major cities are a bit different in so much that women had chance on education etc but that was still frowned upon by many men.

that was the policy, right up until the Afghan army evaporated. stop making that our fault, unless you want to see perpetual occupation which here you say you dont. they were given the training, the equipment, structure for logistics and administration setup. they abandoned it all in days. their air force buggered off to Uzbekistan ffs.

OK you carry on with what you think or choose to believe and I will carry on talking to quite a few marines and others down here in Plymouth who have served in Afghanistan many times and been involved with the training, who have no axe to grind, just the plain honest truth about what it has been like in Afghanistan over the last 20 years, spoke to 2 this week and meeting up this weekend for a drink.
They are not very happy.
So don't FFS me, find out some facts first.

you said yourself, what happened to the trained army. so ask the Marines, were the Afghan's dependent on US air support to hold territory, and since we know the policy was full withdraw in September, was it all a complete waste of time?

Trump was also in favour of walking away but was too busy being a mad prick to get on with the job.

That's pretty much how I would describe Trump too. But Trump is no longer president.

No, but you carry on blaming left wingers if it fits your narrative.

All week the extreme left have been blaming Blair and Bush likr the post I replied to. It's utter nonsense. They haven't been crediting them for a better standard of living for Afghan women in recent years

And whatbout that old extreme left winger Lord Mountbatten who took us out of India? That went well....

Not sure if you're that bothered about what goes on in the world, Ridiculous comment. The reason I posted is because I'm furious at how the US our main allies have turned their back on these people. I'm angry that all the parents that lost their soldier sons and daughters took comfort in the fact that they had achieved something and Biden has changed all that in a couple of weeks!with that axe you are so keen to grind, but the retreat from Afghanistan was wrong in my view. The Americans should have remained there forever, till the locals had finally grasped the nettle. As long as it takes. So we agree. A pity therefore that you derailed your narrative by seeking to score imaginary left versus right points. I can't stand the extreme left or right. Anyone that can never criticize the party they voted in case they lose face to the other party. Can't believe Democrats are digging their heels in supporting Biden or at least using deflectiontactics like blaming Trump

The right wing anti Biden campaign is tedious If I was American I would be a Democrat but I would still be calling for Biden to be removed from the White House, and a pathetic rerun of the same old bollocks directed at Bill Clinton, his missus, Obama and every other Democrat who has stood up abover the parapet. To call this lot left wing is ludicrous. Hilary liked to grandstand to the rust belt but she was a different voice elsewhere (which I found nauseating; albeit less so than Trump). They are all more right wing than Boris. Beware confirmation bias.

You've jumped to the wrong conclusions.

Good highlighting.

Apologies.

If we were in the saloon bar this evening it would have been interesting.

I am a big 'Blair fan' so the fact you distance the 'extreme left' from him is encouraging.

If you want to know why the Afghan army capitulated, here's a few reasons :-

https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/8/17/why-did-the-afghan-army-disintegrate-so-quickly

As for the US, they'd had no military deaths since Feb 2020 so there is an argument that their presence was having a positive effect without suffering the losses.

US seem to be happy to have troops in Germany, South Korea and loads of other places so why not retain a force in Afghanistan?

That's.....insane. Just insane. And Americans voted for this? Either they did (in which case pity the fools) or they didn't so Biden should be impeached.
