Can someone explain to me what he's actually done? All the BBC says is that he's been criticised for his handling of the expenses story - but he's not one of the MPs claiming expenses?!

Hes the one that is suposed to keep the MPs in line. He is the public voice in the commons. Also this plus Damian Green its just all to muc.

Also did i read somewhere that he said he would only quit if his son can take over??

But the speaker is an MP...

Yes. But he is not alowed to vote on any of the legislation. He is imparsail (sp) although he is a Labour MP.

His role is to make sure the commons dose not end up taking the piss or just ends up in a slangin match between the MPs. Also he is to look after the rights of the MPs.

Done a good job aint he.

But the speaker is an MP...

And curiously, is an MP who doesn't have to stand for re-election, as his seat is automatically returned to him at a General Election. So, it's a very privaledged role.

The last 12 months have witnessed a growing moral sclerosis across Westminster and Whitehall bewildering to behold. A fish rots from the head down and in parliament the precipitous decline in ethics and probity begins with the speaker, Michael Martin. For years, the speaker and Mrs Martin have been plundering the public purse for an almost grotesque array of personal perks and foreign junkets. Only last week, we learnt of new beanos to the Gulf, in the wake of similar trips to Hawaii and the Bahamas.

his statement about MP's talking to the media implying that they should keep quiet about things and not bring them into the public domain meaning you and I should never know about what the MP's are up to .......enough for me thanks they can hang him out to dry and they can do the same to all the fiddling bastards.

hope the next parliament is a hung one then they will all be watching one another like hawks ........plenty of independents...........all with white suits

He is in charge of the fees office, who are the people who have been approving and paying all the MPs expenses. If they are going to change the system then he has to be a part of it. MPs knew months ago that these expenses would ultimately be published under the freedom of information act and apparently any talk of reform was resisted by Gorbals Mick. I read a quote the other day that was roughly "I haven't been an MP for all these years to not take what's owed to me". You can add in what happened with Damian Green as well to all this.

Also, he has been claiming expenses. Chauffer driven cars to parkhead included.
