Mass car ownership isn’t to go away I’m afraid. There is no widespread replacement (car share and improved public transportation may work for some).

Will be out after 2 years due to the collapsing prison system the last government created, they will consider the personal sacrifice will be worth it for cause. One traffic jam pales into insignificance compared the climate chaos coming over way.

Personally I'm not a fan of this type of action as it pisses off the public, some real anger on here. Much prefer their Cricket, Wimbledon, Snooker, Art Gallery and Stone Hedge stunts far better with no harm done, and probably even more publicity

I doubt it because they feel their protest is political.

Now, the government has said no more drilling licenses to be issued, they probably won’t need to protest.
We shall see.

Five supporters of the Just Stop Oil climate campaign who conspired to cause gridlock on London’s orbital motorway have been sentenced to lengthy jail terms.

Roger Hallam, Daniel Shaw, Louise Lancaster, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu and Cressida Gethin were found guilty last week of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance for coordinating direct action protests on the M25 over four days in November 2022.


Hallam received a five year sentence on Thursday, while the other four were each sentenced to four years.

The “all publicity is good publicity” adage imho doesn’t apply with stunts like blocking roads for hours or throwing stuff over fine art. It just annoys a hugemass of people, many of whom would otherwise have been sympathetic.

To wins hearts and minds, keep the public on side.

The soup over the Van Gogh was pretty harmless, the painting was protected anyway. Hardly disruptive

The M25 I agree pisses off the public. But 5 years, just ridiculous in the era of a collapsing prison and criminal justice system. 3 months tops IMO. Interesting the judge ordered the jury not to consider evidence about climate breakdown in their defence.

Totally agree that man’s screwing the planet, something drastic needs to change. Tinged with; we’re all hypocrites to varying extents (some on a big scale with frequent flying for example), the UK has made huge strides in CO2 reduction compared to so many G20 nations so a feeling of a drop in the ocean and some JSO type spokesmen come across illogical/very narrow thinking in interviews.

It's a complicated answer.

Our current prison system has failed to a point where certain prisoners are going to be released after 40% of their sentence has been fulfilled.

Why has it failed?

People spending longer in prison due to sentences increasing, not building more prisons etc.

While we are in such a bad situation with prison over crowding I find it odd to sentence protesters to 4-5 years where they could end up out anyway after 40% being served due to over crowding assuming they lose appeals.

Add to previous posters pointing out violent crimes can offer shorter sentences.

So, at the moment, given the state of the prison systems, no. I'd rather have out and out violent offenders not being let out after 40%

If we had the genuine capacity to hold them without issue then yes.

When I was growing up if you were reading about people being imprisoned for peaceful protest it might be an Amnesty International report on a repressive foreign regime. Find it incredibly sad what the tories have done to our country and unfortunately don't see Labour repealing their legislation.
