[News] Just Stop Oil

Unfortunately having witnessed it first hand, is it bollocks.

My mother had live in carers when she finally got home who were delayed by their actions.

I'm really really sorry those carers have to get in car to get to rural Sussex, but unfortunately.....

Their argument being that whatever is left of my mothers life is less important than climate change. History will take that view, but currently I'm dealing with my mum so f**** off.

It's ok for people's lives now to be at risk (those at the end of their life) as long as future generations are ok. That's the ideology.

A weird form of eco eugenics that's deeply individualistic and anti-societal.

That's clearly their position else they wouldn't be stopping ambulances getting into hospitals. Daily Mail ? - nah, I saw it first hand.

When I spoke to the morons they weren't even that big evil "office block" opposite Westminster they were protesting outside was a major London hospital.

And lastly - what the f*** is it with their bloody drums ? Keeping all the facing wards awake that day. Twats.
The ambulance service made a statement

Five supporters of the Just Stop Oil climate campaign who conspired to cause gridlock on London’s orbital motorway have been sentenced to lengthy jail terms.

Roger Hallam, Daniel Shaw, Louise Lancaster, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu and Cressida Gethin were found guilty last week of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance for coordinating direct action protests on the M25 over four days in November 2022.

Hallam received a five year sentence on Thursday, while the other four were each sentenced to four years.

Yes.

Enough is enough when it comes to disruption from doomsday cults.

The sentences are proportionate and in the public interest.

I doubt it because they feel their protest is political.

Now, the government has said no more drilling licenses to be issued, they probably won’t need to protest.
We shall see.

No. These idiots at JustStopOil want no more fossil fuel use after 2030.

No air travel. Few cars. No shipping etc.

Seems very excessive, someone mentioned that they were being dills during the trial.

I guess this is key.

I have wondered why sentencing guidelines / legislation have never been offered a public opinion referendum to make changes, due to the national outrage, but I suspect it could equally be just as dangerous in the hands of many
Leaving punishment in the hands of the people ALWAYS lead to diabolical torture. No exceptions.

You can see already in this thread how horny the majority are for tough authorianism and harsher punishments towards everyone. Its the nature of some humans.

It'll be overturned/ reduced on appeal and hopefully they will be a bit less dickheady and a few Daily Express readers will die of a heart attack.

I agree, But that isn't really the point. Even Thatcher backed off the idea of a referendum on capital punishment. Albeit I'm minded that if Johnson had hung on to his job, such a referendum would have been his wheeze for securing another 5 years. It will of course absolutely be part of Farage's platform.

Back to the original post, it is quite clear that an element in Just Stop Oil and related groups would be sanguine if, for example, someone died because they blocked an ambulance. Collateral damage. I cannot accept that private citizens have the right to make such choices.

Meanwhile, and this is the main point, if this lot had been let off it would have been a green light for anyone to take similar action over whatever pet cause had triggered them, whether valid or merely meretricious. That's mob rule.

What we need in this country is cool calm measured leadership, not a series of wheezes cooked up by a cabal of entitled oafs. Some leadership that we can see is operating for the greater good rather than for cock and wallet. Then decent people may stop taking things into their own hands. Early days but we may be entering calmer leadership waters.

Personally I'm not a fan of this type of action as it pisses off the public, some real anger on here. Much prefer their Cricket, Wimbledon, Snooker, Art Gallery and Stone Hedge stunts far better with no harm done, and probably even more publicity
What about if they held up an FA semi final to the point of postponement that Brighton were playing in? Well?

Legally he is, but morally?
Look up his sentence fo a paedophile last year.

A judge hears every aspect and minuscule detail of a case. He/she also follows strict licensing guidelines. His/her job is to follow the law, not to make deviations based on a ‘moral view’ which will always be at least partly subjective.

If a terrorist bombs a pub and people are killed, a Judge cannot take a view that in his/her view the ends justified the means because he/she agreed with the cause and therefore morally’ the terrorist should be treated in a certain benign way.

That’s the job, Reality is different.

I'm not a fan of JSO's tactics but I do support their aims. What is most worrying, and should worry everyone, is what even the UN have pointed out - that the right to protest has been eroded so much that draconion sentences like this are even possible. All thanks to the previous government who hated protest.

As for the judge directing the jury not to consider the reasons they committed this crime - WTAF ???? Of course the reason for anyone committing any crime should be considered. If I'd been on the jury and a judge directed that I would just vote not guilty straight away.

Also remember they have been given prison time just for discussing organising a disruptive protest !
