by the way, It’s Bodium

Every time this misinformation about “dye/powder which will wash away” comes up I am obliged to correct it.

The specialists who tend to the stones are saying the opposite.

Archaeologist Mike Pitts expressed his strong concern over the potential damage, and said that the megaliths were fenced off and guarded to protect their surfaces, which were entirely covered in prehistoric markings that haven't been fully analyzed. He also expressed concern about possible damage to the divers lichen patterns on the megalith surfaces.

Now I don’t think for a second they considered this, but if anything it makes it even worse and shows how irresponsible they are being by knowingly committing criminal acts without even an understanding of the outcome.
I am generally in agreement, but there isn't much of an issue here, because everyone thinks JSO are nobs. Even if their 'cause' is good.

I'm not sure the extent of permanent damage to the lichens particularly adds to my decision process about this

Meantime climate change, something, something, north sea oil, is it British or Scottish, something, something, independence.

Back to JSO, having a good cause is not enough. The gay-hating American evangelists love Jesus, and Jesus seems to have been a good bloke, and so.....something, something....f*** 'em.

Bored now. But not bored enough to make some other useless comments going forward, I imagine

It's orange powder paint everyone. It comes off.

Meanwhile, the lobbyists are succeeding in getting governments to row back on climate targets.

Who gives a sh!t about some old stones if there's f*cker around to look at them in the future.
Can't believe the meltdown on this thread, a bit of orange cornflour on some stones, canned soup over a painted with a protected film over it. Maximum publicity minimal disruption

The sad fact is JSO will be vindicated in full in the years to come. We were warned and didn't do enough. These public are making personal sacrifices, something I wouldn't be prepared to do.

This sort of substance can cause irreparable damage to ancient stones and the organisms that live on them.

I own land that has ancient standing stones on it and you really cannot mess about with them. They need to be left well alone.

We allow druids and other alternative earth worshippers into the land and they are very aware and considerate of the care you have to take with these stones.

They don’t place candles or incenses on or near the stones. They really are delicate as babies.

I have no real opinion on their previous acts but this one? I can’t condone it. It shows immense ignorance. Both of the damage they will have done and the public perception of a VERY important cause.

Just for information not a critique of your post at all. It can take hundreds of years for lichen to grow. A plate of lichen the size of a 50 pence piece could have taken 100 years to grow to that size. They are extremely delicate and vulnerable to foreign substances.

You don’t even touch lichen with your bare hands, the oil in your skin can damage them.

Lichen is a very valuable way of exploring the history of monuments.

Genuinely, throwing powder paint on these stones is like throwing paint on ancient scriptures. It destroys their fabric and our understanding of their history.

I do see the bigger picture; we won’t have any living organisms, let alone lichens if the world keeps going the way it’s going. However, this was misjudged.

I get that not many people know or care about lichen and similar organisms but I happen to and I can’t get behind this particular act.

I think the sulphur used in fuels will have caused more harm to the lichen, and over a longer time period.
Yes. You are absolutely correct. So why add to the damage.

But I do understand the point you are making. And it’s a very valid one.

As long as it isn't lichen sclerosus 🤯

Of course, you are right, no need to cause unneccessary harm. I think I just like the anarchy in the JSO campaigns, it certainly shakes people up.

Interesting. I think it pisses most people off and makes them hate JSO, and by direct connection, stop listening and grow to resent or even hate their very just cause.

Personally I, and practically everyone I know in real life based on what they’ve said about JSO/climate change in the past, would absolutely support targeted campaigns at the actual people profiting from fossil fuels. Target Shell, target BP, target government, EU and oil and gas concerns around the globe.

As it stands, we’ve got Tarquins and Aramintas bravely vandalising West End theatres, ancient monuments, snooker competitions and art galleries. We’ve got people throwing milk in supermarkets, or blocking entrances to fast food stores. It’s all just so low effort and convenient for them. They are out blocking traffic as ordinary working people (many, like myself, riding increasingly green public transport) try to get to work, to pay bills and make ends meet for their families.

It’s a lesson on everything NOT to do to win hearts and minds and educate people about a cause.

They aren’t seen as champions of the environment, drawing attention to climate change to save the human race.

They ARE, however, seen as idiots committing completely unnecessary crimes and drawing attention to themselves.

As it stands they aren’t activists with a noble cause, they’re criminals in Nike trainers.

It’s a few activists. Let’s not lichen it to the suffragette movement.

Oh and one last thing - drawing attention to the cause at all costs, all publicity is good publicity yeah?

Well I hadn’t thought about Rolf Harris for a while prior to his arrest.

I can't disagree with you on any of this. But, maybe future generation might see it differently. As I said, I just like the anarchy and reaction. It's a little like National Lampoons completely pointless and futile gesture.

****s. f***ing losing support. Their cause is by far the most important that we face, but this takes the piss. Don’t agree with destroying heritage that everyone enjoys. Its not protest its criminal act. On the flip side, what more do we have to do for the governments to act URGENTLY.
This. All of it.

Honest question.... are you unaware of the raft of (very expensive) policy and legislation already in our laps that are the 'acts' that you are seeking?...

I am increasingly surprised by the tone of some of the comment here that is seemingly ignoring the many steps already taken and the already evolving transition towards 'zero' this and 'neutral' that..

You can't just flick a switch and turn off a century and a half of industrial and technological revolution, this move has to be a gradual process.
