Britain accounts for less than 2% 0f global emissions....you do realise that don't you ...?? Asia , China , USA and Russia are the major offenders ....Joylon and Tarquin throwing tomato soup at ambulances is a totally futile display of misplaced energy.

I seem to recall that the protesters who were given jail sentences for the M25 stunts are New Zealanders who had specifically come to the UK to encourage this sort of protest.........if this is correct then they certainly weren't picking a country where their efforts could make the largest impact on emissions.......

I am not going to pretend I wouldn't be pissed off if I had somewhere to be and JSO blocked the road, but I really do wonder what the alternative to direct action should be? As Chris Packham pointed out in that video above, he attended an anti-fossil fuel rally with 60,000 others and it wasn't even mentioned in any printed or visual media except a few inches in The Times. Yet a few people throw some powder over a snooker table and suddenly there is a discussion to be had.

If you're not at least sympathetic to the direct protestors than I'm glad you weren't around when our football club needed saving, because that wasn't achieved by a handful of strongly worded letters to the Albion board at the time, I can tell you.

I was around and I don't think it's a fair comparison. All of our protests were targeted and relevant to what we were protesting about, i.e the sale of the ground and ownership of the club. It all happened at the ground or a related location such as Lancaster gate and a*cher's house.

If we'd all turned up at the snooker or cricket and ruined it for other people then everyone would've quite rightly called us selfish attention seeking tossers and we would've lost any public sympathy. (see also vandalising art and making the general public late for work/appointments)

People are arguing that any coverage is good coverage but as far as I can see the only debate these protesters have started is about their method of protest, and the vast majority is against them. They haven't started a public debate about oil exploration, so what's the point? I'd like to know how their measuring their own success and what their KPIs are. I suspect it's simply column inches for the sake of it.

I can remember the coverage when Brighton fans invaded the pitch and broke the crossbar on the goal. The press coverage was not very sympathetic at all.

Part of the reason, I am sympathetic to these protestors is to do with renewables and vested interests by politicians in charge who are actually being paid to lobby.

The other reason is that any form of protest now is being handled very badly. The new legislation which came into law in April is draconian. Press being arrested for covering the situation, a woman arrested because she stood near the protestors, a man in the West Country arrested for holding up a blank card when royalty were nearby.

Our protests would be illegal now.

The new legislation is a direct repose the their tactics. Should the press be allowed to film and glorify law breaking? One of the LBC journalists filmed people smashing up petrol pumps and instantly circulated it to millions on their twitter account. Then they complained they were being picked on

Journalists film and report on wars. Is that glorifying war?

Do the press deserve to be locked up, searched, equipment confiscated including their families devices, and then released the next day with no transport to get back to their own vehicles?
It’s intimidation.
It was intimidation and ruled unlawful afterwards, at the Sarah Everard vigil/protest so don’t think it can’t happen elsewhere.
