It's clear JSO have changed their tactics from blocking main roads to incidential protest at high profile events. The way i see it, I would be worried about mankind if we are this close the the environmental tipping point and there were no visible, meaningful protest. My sympathies are with JSO.

We just need to pollute less as individuals, familiies, communities, countries. It should be a central consideration in the major decisions we take. We could all do more.
This. ^
With the caveat that those in an immediate life-threatening situation are given safe (and prompt) passage through any protests.

Look, I'm 99% in agreement, so no need to be so defensive.
What I am asking (and I thought I had already done so, clearly) is:
Do you agree that it is okay to refuse to move out of the way, when faced with an ambulance/car/whatever, containing someone who is in a life-threatening situation?
You can’t read can you?

Is it any wonder I am defending my views when a) you’re challenging them and b) the answer is in the very post you are quoting.

It says, I don’t support obstructing ambulances.

You seem to want to extend the vehicle definition to cars, but let’s add bicycles, perambulators and charabancs to the mix. No, I don’t support the willful obstruction of vehicles containing people who are traveling to hospital with life threatening conditions.

But don’t you see what’s happening here?

They’ve got you talking about another issue while Rome burns. It’s what the likes of @JC Footy Genius and his other incarnations are very good at. They are, to use Coutts phrase, ‘disingenuous grifters.’

You do me an injustice, here.
I have clearly stated (with no ambiguity) that I fully support the protests and the cause for them.
I care not a jot for the disruption caused by them...not a single iota.
There is an immediate need for change, for the sake of life on this planet.
(With me so far?)
What I have an issue with is twunts who would bar passage for anyone in need of immediate treatment - that is all.
When you lose your basic humanity over a 'cause', then it's a lost cause.
Oh, and yes, I can read perfectly well, thank you, and I'm fully aware (woke, even!) to the pointless attempts to swerve the ongoing issues.
As I say, you do me an injustice.

This is the fundamental point of disagreement on this discussion. For some, disruption is a 'requirement' for progress. For others, it's an infuriating distraction. Not sure how we resolve this.
Direct action is not a distraction. It keeps the matter on the agenda. The government want us to all calmly go away, and the media pull the wool over our eyes and brand any action ‘zealotry’ (see Daily Mail).

I mean, if your sole objective is to stop the destruction of the human race and you are being called a zealot I give up.

And every story you’ll see has two sides. Just as everyone will claim to have been delayed by these zealots. It’s not true.

People like Jonathan Harmsworth should really be called to account. He’s allowed his media to distort and distract and for what gain to the human race? None.

By way of evidence:

And I am not saying there will not be examples of real delays, but the private sector media will print whatever their paymasters say.

We must take direct action. When there are 10 million people on the streets and we have a government that’s truly on board, then JSO can stop. As it is, even bloody Starmer is reduced to calling JSO deluded because he knows he has to be seen to be hating them too because the likes of Murdoch and Harmsworth are letting their papers do the same for personal gain.

The world is f***ed.

Essentially, we are all too self centred. Oh yes, we’ll check on the old lady next door when there’s a storm to make sure she has enough tea and then go home to give ourselves a pat on the back. We’re brilliant at pulling together in a crisis. But when it comes to collective action for long term good, we are pathetic. We’re more focused on ourselves and too easily divided.

Well ladies and gents, it’s great that we’re good at pulling together in a crisis as there’s a truck load of them about to come round the corner at us.

I’m delighted to hear that, but quite how I’m doing you an injustice when you keep asking me the same question where the answer to that question is in every reply to you is bewildering.

Great, we’re in agreement.

I never sought to enter into a discussion with you anyhow. It was with another poster, so shall we move on together?

It remains all too tragic that the bulk of our media focus and the trivial levels of disruption from JSO rather than the climate catastrophe unraveling before our eyes. This July has been a total shitshow and we’re only at 1.2c of warming. Wait for 2, 2.5 or 3, life is going to be very different.

As for the client journalist that take a wage from the likes of Hamsworth or Murdoch, it must be pretty bad for the soul.

I assume you mean me. Firstly, you know nothing about me whatsoever. If you did, you will have read my posts where I state I do as much as the next person towards living a carbon neutral life. I eat less meat than I did, I recycle thoroughly, use public transport (despite a higher cost and a lower reliability), mend, repair and recycle wherever possible, extending this to my workplace in the arts sector. Furthermore, I don’t even own a car presently.

And once again, not being a left winger and definitely not a Tory confuses some people. Especially those who are extremely political. I take each cause/case/policy/issue as it comes. A lot of my views are seen on here as right wing, and a lot are decidedly left wing. But I could never commit to one blanket political outlook because it rules out common sense when “the other side” has completely different ideas I agree with.

Regardless, this isn’t a political issue it’s a societal one. Sure, the Tories have done very little to affect changes in the usage of fossil fuels, but disagreeing with a cretinous element of JSO who refuse to let ill people through their slow marches doesn’t make me a Conservative Party supporter either.

What a lot of people miss when they get incredibly emotionally involved in a cause, is any sort of nuance or compromise. It’s “we’re 100% right, you’re 100% wrong - oh and we make the rules as to what “right” is”.

For the billionth time, I accept climate change is very real and dangerous. I respect JSO’s right to peaceably protest within the confines of the law. I don’t respect their attitude as you evidenced before backtracking, that one innocent life preventable lost as a direct cause of a protest is acceptable.

This is why the comments made by their hierarchy is absolutely astonishing to many, because those sympathetic are still humans with empathy despite their vociferousness in campaigning, and should treaty to always allow those seeking medical care through any protests. It’s really quite simple.

Lots of conservative voters are very climate change aware, and lots of Labour voters couldn’t give a shit.

Nobody has infiltrated a football fan’s forum over the course of 14 years to act as a sleeper agent and spread what you deem to be “right wing propaganda”. Your paranoia and anger in this thread makes you come across very unstable and not to be reasoned with.

Anyway, I’m done with you now. All the best and enjoy the season.

Disruption so far has gained no influence or widespread support.

Moreover, they don’t do themselves any favours. It has apparently been so hot in the UK in the last fortnight, the fish belonging to this womans Grandson died in the family pond.

Great that this has given people a laugh, but the effects of climate change appear to be particularly severe on aquatic life, particularly marine life. We already know coral reefs are dying. Increasing CO2 is slowing down calcification in corals and microorganisms including lots of types of marine plankton - these are at the bottom of the food chain and feed (either directly or indirectly) all the fish, dolphins, whales etc in the sea apart from those that directly eat marine plants. So basically everything in the sea is completely f**ked apart from jellyfish. Great stuff.

You're doing it again.

Using hyperbole like paranoia and in previous posts claiming a 'psychotic nature' - it's all very clever. It's all designed to create friction and confusion amongst posters. You know what you're doing.

You know you can't win the climate change argument now, so your tactics have changed. You are the very worst enemy of the people. Nigel Farage and Donald Trump would be proud of you.

I do get angry at posters like you, because you stir and create division when we simply haven't got time for that. I hope that most see through you.

I'm sure it's not good for your soul.

I'm off for a glass of wine now, so cheerio.

In many ways the media focus on what they think will get the public's attention/sell content. We can see from this thread that many/most are only interested when events/people are disrupted. As mentioned earlier in the thread extinction rebellion protests have occured with no press coverage.

JSO etc have found a way to get that press coverage and public focus on their cause. Obviously the price to pay is that much of the coverage is negative and driven by a press that seek to demonise them.

As we see on this thread though, amongst the hyperbole and outrage by the 'wont somebody think of the . . . ' brigade we see discussion on the climate crisis and a recognition of what we need to do to push the agenda and make changes. The question is: would this thread exist or be so prominent without the JSO protests? My guess is no.

Disclaimer (for those who require it): I do not condone the slowing of any vehicles containing people who require emergency care. Assuming the information I have seen is complete and correct I think the protester made the wrong call not letting the car through.

Great to hear. As others have mentioned, it would be a good thing for this to be official policy. I want JSO to keep campaigning peacefully and within the boundaries of the law as I hear and agree with their message, not the actions of all of their followers, even if the higher ups don’t agree.

I think we should start to take the names of all the climate cynic and skeptics for a future date when we can ask them what in gods names they were thinking about.

People now know that climate change is affecting our biodiversity. They know it is killing people. If they are persisting in attacking JSO rather than government and business policy, we need to know why.

And if someone does tragically die because an ambulance is delayed, then we can add their name to the 12,000 others claimed by climate change this year.
I'm sure there are good reasons not to mourn the avoidable death of a hypothetical baby, but it's too soon (yet) to develop compassion fatigue because of the unnamed 12,000. The milder weather in winter means that the number of deaths caused by cold has decreased by more than the increased deaths from heat.

That particular problem may arise later, but not yet.

If you read Twitter it would appear people really do need wet nursed 24/7. Where’s my holiday rep we don’t know what to do. Personally I wouldn’t pin my survival hopes on an 18 yr old who wanted a summer job abroad
