Cheers for the advice , I guess I am a bit impatient and just want to book things now instead of having the hassle of opening a new account and waiting for the chq to clear ! Just want to cheer her up as soon as possible !

Can't you pay a small deposit to book the holiday? Least then you can have confirmation to show her, See the her face light up then cash the cheque and pay the rest off

There is always the option of buying premium bonds? Tax free and you can cash them in at any time with about a months notice. The returns are about the same as the Bank savings rate and you win the big one! Just go to the Post Office or download a form on-line.

Seriously do not go to those rip-off cheque cashing places, open a Building Society account as the cheque will clear in around 7 days then withdraw the money as cash

really, opening an account is not that much hassle. certainly not for the sake of 5% of a holiday sized windfall. i recently opend a Nationwide account, its utterly unmemorable because it was so simple, like creating a new email account.

I wish you and your wife all the luck in the world mate. My wife and I went through the same thing 3 years ago and we got through it together, you can too. Be her rock!

Good Luck with the chemo. A close family friend has had chemo and radiotherapy and has come through it and my sister in law did last year. Hope you both enjoy the money doing something nice when shes better

My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 98. Operation to remove 2 lumps and a few lymph nodes under her arm to which it had spread. Chemo & Radiotherapy. She has been clear for 13 years now, and is fit as a fiddle!

Hope that helps, from yet another Worthingite.

You're a good man. Hope it all works out for you and your family matey.

It’s a great idea that you want to surprise her but from personal experience I know that just getting the news that you have had this windfall would be a big boost to her. I had an insurance payout halfway through chemo so the sense that things aren’t all bad and that sometime things can go right for you is a really big deal when you are caught up in the relentless cycle of chemo. It would also lift a huge weight if she has any (real or perceived) concerns about money.

It obviously depends on the chemo and her reaction to it but it can take quite some time for the body to get back up to speed after recovering from chemo (months not weeks) so a holiday may still be quite some time off, so you don’t have to rush in to deciding anything. And don’t forget about the issue of holiday insurance if you are going away – its expensive enough if you stay within the EU but try getting a quote for somewhere like Egypt and that will be a large wedge of your money gone before you even get there - always assuming they will insure her!

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Does she have any hobbies you can really treat her with. I bought a stupidly priced camera the week after diagnosis to make me feel a bit better. Actually really helped as I ended up spending a lot of my free time (Fully paid : Thanks work) learning a new hobby instead of thinking about the daily grind of going for Rads. Guess Chemo is a different path, but all best wishes!

GB has a point about Holiday Insurance although my insurers gave me permission to travel after treatment and did not put a supplement on the policy, until of course it came to renew when it went up considerably. MacMillan can advise on the best policies at the time.

Just like to echo all the good wishes on this thread. Mrs P had to go through two lumpectomy's, followed by chemo and radio therapy nearly 10 years ago now, so I know what you and your good lady are going through. All the best to you both.
