That's just it. It isn't just the Yanks. It's us as well. Our banks have made stupid investments, too many people have spent all what the have earnt and not saved. Yes, I know we all aspire to a certain standard of living, but as a country we can't afford it as we aren't very productive.
Look at the amount of personnal debt there is on credit cards, car loans, mortgages. The 'boom' under Labour has been financed on what? unsustainable house prices. No-ones been complaining about spending their 'profit' that they have made on their house going up in value after remortgaging.
I have very little sympathy for those who haven't been sensible. I do have sympathy for those who have lost their jobs and maybe facing severe hardship if it's not been their fault. Too many people tried to get rich from soaring house prices, and a lot of these will get burnt now.
Over the last 4-5 years, I've worked very hard to reduce my mortgage down. I could have had a more extravagant life-style, but I chose not to. I can now weather whatever happen and be OK. I just hope that this is a wake-up call for a lot of people, and the mentality changes away from the spend, spend, spend culture.
I also fear that this is going to get a lot worse before it improves. There will be more job losses, leading to less spending and more home reposessions.
