So neither were a success at the playing side of the game yet excelled in management. Think you have validated my point. Everyone who watches football can have an opinion and there are those that have watched for years and haven't a clue and some that do. To say that those that haven't played at a reasonable level aren't entitled to have their opinion heard was and is pathetic.
Why was Mourinho a fairly decent player? Nowhere does it say that about him on Wikipedia. It doesn't even list his appearances as a player.
As for the Ice Skating analogy if you watched ice skating week in and week out and couldn't be bothered to understand the finer points and can't tell who is better then who then you are probably wasting your time. However, if you enjoy it, so be it. I have merely been criticising the sweeping statement originally made. Some people will watch football for ever and never understand it and other do. There are people behind me at Withdean who used to shout offside at throw ins until the law was pointed out to them and they have been going for years.
Its not a question of 'not being bothered' to understand the finer points, more that I don't think it is possible to fully comprehend them if you have never attempted them yourself. Whilst my sweeping statment was perhaps too generalisable, I'm not going to back down from my point that most football fans who have played very little (or never) themselves, cannot criticise/praise/realise aspects which those who have can.
