I get the 'team player bit' Look at Man City last night. definitely stronger as a unified force

BUT, not at the expense of sapping the flair from players.

Goals scorers gone backwards
players afraid to shoot
individual creativity stifled.

Cucurella, Lamptey, Trossard are all as exciting as Knocky or Izquierdo were, they are better players too.

Not really……even if they aren’t ultimately first team material for us, we’ll more often than not still profit from them. Same with our own academy - doubt more than 1 or 2 in 100 of the U15 scholars will ever make the first team, so should we scrap it ??

Not suggesting scrapping it. Just a comment that leaving this as the only source of getting the one decent striker we need could prove more expensive than buying one. Granted some of the money made on academy players could contribute to a major purchase but it is a very long term strategy for one particular type of player.

Personally I don't agree with you at all. I think we're great to watch. Our patterns of play are almost untouched in the PL, only Man City really top us for that. We all know we lack a cutting edge but the play leading up to that is wonderful at times. And regarding individual players, I prefer watching the class of Lallana, Trossard and Bissouma to both Izquierdo and Knockaert.

And yes Lamptey is exciting to watch but what's wrong with a right back being exciting? In modern football, the full backs/wing backs have become possibly the most important players on the pitch.

Agreed. MacAllister, Gross, Lallana, Moder, all allowed to express themselves too from what I've seen, trouble is they don't have the explosive pace of Knocky or Izquierdo, and I'm not sure if people are aware or not, but you can't coach pace.

It is amazing where people get to when you hit a bad patch. Man City's Cancelo, Liverpool's Trent-Arnold, Chelsea's James, they must be gutted these fullbacks are creating and scoring so much - bloody fullbacks and their exciting non-defending contributions! They're there to defend!!

If that is the case, you have to be impressed by the level of impact the coach has as it is only two poor games ago the boys danced with Liverpool!

Maybe people are drawing too much conclusions from a few games. It is common.

Agree about pace as aside from Lamptey/Cucurella - where is it - but we're all getting a bit misty eyed if we think Knockaert and Izquierdo were rampaging down the wings in their multiple PL appearances for the Albion - it was very inconsistent. Although AK's 18 months in the Champ for us were one of the most golden periods for any Albion player. And sadly neither were great at being wingbacks.

and PS: Mwepu, Trossard, Welbeck, Biss and even Solly might have something to say about not having players with the ability to score a worldie from time to time.

We don't currently have a player who can work the magic - Trossard is close but subdued by having to carry too much midfield work. Lamptey might deliver but we don't know if his finishing is up to it. I don't see any other player in current set up who will score the sort of goal that AK did against Palace or Izquierdo did against WHU (twice) or Stoke. The other player who might is Sarmiento but because of our teams poor performances against Norwich & Newcastle he has not got on the pitch.

Frustrating sure i can get on board with that at times, its more frustrating being decent and not winning than it was being poor and scraping points for some reason

But boring no way, we are very very good to watch.

I liked us as a counter attacking side with wide players.

All fell apart when Hughton switched to 433 and we turned rubbish.

In order to be able to compete for a top 10 finish and be able to beat anyone on our day means we need to play a progressive passing game. Bloom & Barber knew that when dismissing CH. Teams who finish in the bottom half of the league will struggle to attract creative and efficient goalscorers as richer clubs will give them better offers. Producing our own talented players is financially the best way to approach our aims to improve and to compete with the best sides in the country.

It is very common for improvement to come in waves as plans are implemented strategically, reviewed and adapted to maximise outcomes. One of the most important positions in a progressive passing team are ball playing centre backs which we have recruited for a number of years, we then saw a group of reliable central midfielders develop very quickly in Alzate, Sanders, Maloumby & Jenks who have since been replaced with younger players allowing them to gain experience. We have several goalkeepers in the Sanchez mould who are big and commanding of their box and have great distribution.. We now have an academy performing really well. Bloom, Barber & Ashworth must see the continual progress and be convinced that we are working towards being able to produce some great players.

Unfortunately continual and sustainable progress within our financial constraints has to be carefully considered and takes time to see the real long term benefits but the sort of players we have identified and tracked are consistently being purchased by teams who play in European competitions which suggests we are doing many things right.

a few seasons as opposed to a few games, as a more recent post suggests the progress comes in waves, we're not currently on a crest . . . but hopefully will be soon . . . the key indicator for 5 years is we're still not progressing in the scoring goals bit.

We've not scored much this season and hardly at all in 5 games. i know . I've been there. I haven't forgotten. 10 or so hours on the coach to Villa and back after a game with 2 attempts on target sears in your memory a bit.
But . Do we have players that can score the odd worldie like Izquierdo and AK - then of course we do. Do they do it very often - of course not. But neither did AK or Izquierdo.

Can't help thinking that counter attacking is a cowards way of playing. I love exciting wide players, but you can do that on the front foot. Defending in numbers and having a couple of speedy players doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.
