This still seems a bit opaque. The BBC report says nothing more than he has died. There is none of the usual statement from the family, it just goes straight into his career. The other reports are coming from the BBC's. Kevin Campbell's tweet still seems to be the only source.

Ignore this - The family has now released a statement. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/football/64741385 I hoped it was all a mistake gone viral, but sadly not.

How very sad. The voice of football from my childhood right through to adulthood. I had no idea if he was ill, seems very sudden.

RIP Motty. You were the best.

Great Worthing connections, his Dad the Revd Bill Motson was the minister at Steyne Gardens Methodist Church and unoffical club Chaplain at Worthing FC in the Barry Lloyd glory years.

There’s nothing for the family to say at this stage. It’s not really anybody’s business apart from theirs. I’m sure they will release something at a later stage.
I think I saw a documentary he and his family made about their love of France. Was it Rheims ? Enjoyable programme.

One of the greatest broadcasters of all time.

He managed to convey a genuine love of football with infectious enthusiasm, but was impeccably neutral about the outcome.

Distinctive and immediately recognisable. He obviously prepared meticulously for each and every game. He also managed to be funny without resorting to obviously pre prepared gags.

A massive presence from my and I suspect many of our childhoods.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
He mentioned his father sitting in the West Stand of the Goldstone on one programme. I found it.

Motty was the voice of football to me, and one of my generation.
Motson covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for the BBC.

A sad loss.
