At the foot of the downs
Is there no end to your Hollywood lifestyle NMH? Shagging models, massive pads and now the brains behind the re-union of the biggest punk band ever? The jealousy courses through my whole body. Plus you are a Brighton fan to boot, aaaaargh i hate you, i hate you, i hate you!

The Sex Pistols weren't even the biggest punk band in England !!!

I'm sure you have done a few things in your life SJLM, that I might be a tad envious about?

Although the thought of doing ANYTHING whilst being a palace fan makes my skin crawl and me want to go and wash, before the flies could smell my thoughts.

Never lived in a 'massive pad' though, just a simple three-bed bungalow overlooking the Pacific, with a sometime-view of Catalina Island in the distance if the layer of smog would allow. "brains behind the reunion" would be overstating it too, doncha think? I was first to suggest and discuss it with Mr Rotten, that's all.

There were some rather memorable times to be had in Hollywood though, as you might imagine. I frequented the more musically-inclined drinking holes, and worked for a casting company for a while - so it was hard to avoid meeting up with the occasional 'legend'. One of the yachts I crewed on and helped set up (lines, sails etc), belonged to a client who worked for an artist management company too, so there'd be occasional guest crew-members from bands.
So, more difficult to avoid bumping into the occasional celeb, really.
Rotten/Lydon though, was an odd coincidence of the area where he and I lived.

I actually helped instigate the Pistols Reunion, after reading a snippet in the Mirror on a visit home (here) about them being offered 25million to reform. The Mirror were bullshitting, as it happened, as the Sex Pistols members hadn't even been contacted or offered anything by anyone.
We talked about it on his boat, which was a few yards away from mine (in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles), and he asked me what I thought about the idea (after his initial indignation about the unsubstantiated rumour). I told him I thought it a "shit idea if it was about music image and history, but fantastic if you want to get a much bigger boat".
We talked about new material for the revival (which was my idea), but Lydon quickly dismissed that whole idea.
I got comped tickets to The Hollywood Palladium gig and watched from the vip area (next to 'Flea').
The band had obviously improved as musicians (not that their music was ever particularly difficult), and they played 'proper' long sets - instead of 15 minutes of mayhem before starting a fight. Initially, Matlock was the only person in the original group who could actually play an instrument.
It was strongly rumoured that the original recordings were done with Chris Spedding sessioning. Let's just say that when I brought that up, John did not refute it.

Although it was rumored that Chris Spedding was involved, it was in fact Jones who provided the baselines on NMTB

How did you mange to get int Johns inner circle, why does he rate you opinion on issues involving with his career ? Only normally Anita, Norma or Rambo get listen to.

imo not at all the best. Like Nirvana, they had one reasonable album collating a few hits, and were otherwise rather over-rated.
The DAMNED were earlier anyway, and the first to issue a record in that movement. I like them more than The Sex Pistols - but Magazine ruled as far as I was concerned.

its The Clash for me, outside of Snuff they are/were the only British Punk band worth listening to, Id include the Buzzcocks in there as well

for me my tastes have always been a heavily US dominated scene ever since I first heard Teenagers From Mars by The Misfits

Jones provided basslines?? Glen Matlock was the only one who could be said to have any ability to play an instrument, and HE played BASS!
Maybe you meant that Jones did, despite rumours, play the chords - but Johnny could/should have just put that record straight when I brought it up.....but he didn't.
Judging by the smoothness and timing of the chords on NMTB and those early singles, I'd say it was more-than-probable that Jones didn't make the final cut on those recordings.

As for "managing to get into John's inner circle" - I didn't actually spot any kind of imaginary silk rope surrounding his personage?! He spoke to me first anyway, wanting help with a computer game/pub quiz thing he was trying to negotiate. I pointed out what he needed to do, and he stood the beers.
When he found out I was a boat-neighbour, we talked mostly about football. I could get the scores on the internet as they happened, so kept him abreast of how Arsenal had got on.
Managing to down a few Red-Stripe was fairly easy, and we competed on that level occasionally.
Nora is an heir to a German newspaper magnate fortune, I understand. So Herr Johnny has rather landed on his feet there.
She's 10 years his senior, and mother to 'Ari Up' of The Slits.

Its Fact that Jones did the baselines, Matlock had already left before they recorded NMTB.
this was confirmed by Bill Price (sound engineer) and Chris Thomas who produced the album.
Fully know the history thank you, Lived and breathed it got over 30 years.
Also, all this recent racist crap being cited against him, Ari's kids are Jamaican FFS

Ah the good old defence of "some of my best friends are black"

He really got on his bike about being called a racist on the One Show and used the fact that he grew up in a multi cultural area and that all his kids were Jamaican in his defence and threatened ( with a law suit not a good kicking) anyone who dared to call him racist
