Joe Gatting: not very good at cricket.

To repeat my comments on a thread earlier in the summer, Joe has turned out to be a pretty poor cricketer. Has he got one decent score in any form of cricket this season? Cannot figure why he keeps being picked. Presumably Sussex have no one better?

Quite a lot in common with his abilities as a professional footballer.

One of the most dumb-assed posts I've ever read. Sure, his form's not great but how many sportsmen have scored for the Albion and bagged a ton for Sussex? A bit more respect required I think.

I've not been Gattings biggest fan this season but to be honest he's not done too bad considering, as others have said, the situation he usually comes into.

Problem last night showed up way above him. Once Luke had gone nobody came in who could consistently hit the fence, without Smith and Prior the batting looks pretty lightweight.

And what on earth is the point of Joyce playing T20 if he's not gonna come in till 5? I cannot think of one good situation where him coming in there in the shortest game could help the side.

Gatting has basically only been playing one day cricket this season.
Coming in at #6/7 with all the supposed superstars out, and behind the run rate with if he is lucky 4 overs left and only the bowlers to come, do people expect him to score a rapid 40 runs.

For the non cricketing posters than seem keen to slag him off, these are his stats this season, only his 2nd season as a 22 year old professional
40 Overs
Innings 5,
Ball Faced 82,
Runs 100,
Strike Rate 121.95
Average 25.

20 Overs
Innings 14
Balls Faced 157
Runs 117
Strike Rate 131.18
Average 15.7

Not that shabby when you look at some of the esablished senior professionals.
So give him a break, i've seen enough of him this year to think he will become a damn good cricketer for Sussex

A great 71 tonight, but must take issue with your comment about "Joe only basically playing one day cricket". (I guess that helps your point if you ignore his 9 four day innings averaging 13.77 with a HS of 24!).

Gatting 7 9 0 124 24 13.77 0 0 3 0

Still if he's deemed a good enough prospect by Sussex management, who are we are to argue.

OK, he was never going to really cut it at League One level, but there aren't that many who can say they played both professional football and cricket.

As I started the thread I was going to offer to eat humble pie ....

on the other hand his scores have been pretty dire up until now ...

anyway, well done Jo ... keep up the improvement.

Maybe he was reading the thread and it spurred him into improving his form??

I think my critical eye now is down to him never looking like he was trying when playing for the Albion. A lazy, couldnt be arsed attitude which I hope he doesnt carry through into his cricket career. Its talent AND EFFORT that bring success.

f*** me how can you judge him on his t20 performances?
He was in a position where he had to hit out, which will result on him losing is wicket.
He's shown today when he is moved up the order and has time he can get good scores.

Exactamundo.

Goldstone has a problem with a variety of people (disabled, immigrants and so on). I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

The same sort of person heils Hatchett as the second coming. Cricket is built on a career of averages. Not a season or two. To judge one youngster (without having seen him play) on his scores is ridiculous. Did Goldstone study the dismissals? Did Goldstone study the match play and situation that Gatting found himself in? Did Goldstone consider that many cricketers don't peak until a later date? Did Goldstone manage to dress himself this morning?

Well Mr BOF, it looks like you and I could become firm friends. When can we plan to go for a couple of beers and discuss all we have in common?

 I wasn't being serious. I was only being antagonistic. I'd happily share a beer with anyone that purports to supporting Brighton, unless they wear the latest gear and want me to storm a pub with them.

I DO think you were being a bit hasty with Gatting. This innings means little in the long run. He might fail, he might not, but I think it is churlish ti write him off so soon.

I don't wear the latest gear. I don't storm pubs.

But as I'm living in Manhattan at present the beer might have to wait a while!

Joe is a great player and still only 22, Sussex would not be sticking with him if they did not feel he has the ability to gain experience and develop over time.

I look forward to him playing more games and becoming a great player for Sussex. Even if his carear stopped today he has played for the Albion and Sussex and scored both goals, and centurys, I'd loved to be able to have said that, local lad gets to play ad train with world professionals in our beloved Sussex by the sea, quality.

Oh and well done on the 70 odd last night, the next 100 is on its way.
