Joe Gatting: not very good at cricket.

Can we all just repeat a previous thread we have done?

"Would the fans please stay off the pitch at the end so Sam and the lads can do a lap of honour"

To repeat my comments on a thread earlier in the summer, Joe has turned out to be a pretty poor cricketer. Has he got one decent score in any form of cricket this season? Cannot figure why he keeps being picked. Presumably Sussex have no one better?

Quite a lot in common with his abilities as a professional footballer.

But considerably better than you at both cricket and football, no doubt.

I admit that I am not a fan pf Gatting but every time I have seen him play he has been in a high pressure shit or bust situation. Not ideal for a relatively inexperienced batsmen.

Last night I really think Luke should take a long hard look at himself and ask himself why oh why did he play that ridiculous shot whne there ws no need. At that point in the innings Notts were slowly beginninbg to disintegrate all by themselves.

Also in this years T20 the good Dr has been a pale imitation of himself.

This.

He lost us the game last night. There was very little pressure at that stage and it was a dismal shot. The players who came in later were forced to play big shots because we got behind the rate, but he was not under the same pressure so I have no idea why he did that.

I thought Hodd was gonna win us the game at one point.

In batting terms, I'm pointing my finger more at Goodwin, Yardy AND Wright.

All are capable of winning matches from the position we'd got ourselves into. I'm not saying we deliberately lost (of course not), but we did bat like a team doing a bloody good impression of that.

To blame Gatting alone in all this - unfair.

But Yardy always puts in a shift as a bowler and is also a very good lim overs captain.

No in that respect he did brilliantly last night. But as an England international and club captain to be run out like that (as he is quite often) is poor

Profile
Like his father, Steve, Joe Gatting was on the books at Brighton & Hove Albion for three seasons, but when offered a chance to join Sussex's cricket academy turned his back on football. He made an immediate impression as a top-order batsman when he scored a good hundred against Surrey in the pre-season Pro Arch Trophy in Abu Dhabi, and followed with a big hundred on his first-class debut against Cambridge UCCE.

Is there some sort of separate agenda to starting threads like this? It seems that there are a few posters on this board who are looking for Joe Gatting to fail as a cricketer just because he didn't make it at the Albion. Instead you could try the novel approach of getting off a young cricketer's back and allowing him the proper time to develop as a player. As said before, it wasn't Gatting who got a start and then got out - he only got to bat right near the end once the more experienced players had largely thrown the game away. If you want to use last night's performance then you might just as well say 'Ed Joyce - not very good at cricket' as he got out for less than Gatting remained unbeaten on, but that wouldn't appear to suit your agenda, would it?

I am not just referring to last night's innings. I cannot recall one decent score that Gatting has achieved all season.

Yeah, very harsh to blame Gatting. The game was all but lost by the time he went in.

Thanks for the stats, Storer68. A First Class batting average of 27.35 is nothing to be ashamed of for a young cricketer in the early stages of his career. I really hope Sussex stick with him. For all his deficiencies as a footballer, he has always seemed like a good lad.

Joyce played soup herb lee against wuss esther shire yet seems to struggle in the shorter form. Last night he did not neeed to blast away yet still struggled.

Dwayne Smith was in Windies - and why is that? Would it not have been sensible to have the scond overseas player always available?

Gatting has basically only been playing one day cricket this season.
Coming in at #6/7 with all the supposed superstars out, and behind the run rate with if he is lucky 4 overs left and only the bowlers to come, do people expect him to score a rapid 40 runs.

For the non cricketing posters than seem keen to slag him off, these are his stats this season, only his 2nd season as a 22 year old professional
40 Overs
Innings 5,
Ball Faced 82,
Runs 100,
Strike Rate 121.95
Average 25.

20 Overs
Innings 14
Balls Faced 157
Runs 117
Strike Rate 131.18
Average 15.7

Not that shabby when you look at some of the esablished senior professionals.
So give him a break, i've seen enough of him this year to think he will become a damn good cricketer for Sussex
