Joe Gatting: not very good at cricket.

To repeat my comments on a thread earlier in the summer, Joe has turned out to be a pretty poor cricketer. Has he got one decent score in any form of cricket this season? Cannot figure why he keeps being picked. Presumably Sussex have no one better?

Quite a lot in common with his abilities as a professional footballer.

He's clearly got the talent, he just doesn't seem mentally up to it as a pro

What a pathetic post!

In fairness to the bloke, most players that have had a shit period have had a good chance to recover their form in the 2nd XI.

Gatting (and now Chad!) somehow still keep getting picked for the firsts, regardless of how badly they are doing

If you want to get on the back of Sussex batsmen, rather than slag off a young player in his second season (cricketers tend to take longer to develop than footballers), there are currently a number of established players whose shot selection can be dire in all forms of the game.

How many cricketers reach their peak anywhere near the age of 22?

Besides, his T20 stats are pretty irrelevant. He is a hit out or get out number for Sussex. It didn't work out tonight and he has been under par this season, but he shouldn't be written off.

Like Matt prior. Granted he is a wicketkeeper but still he's been poor this season

Cant think of one Sussex player that has had a really good season (RMJ possibly Collymore). Has been a very stop start season and we now need to make sure we win Div 2 otherwise it will be our worst season in years.

As for Gatting, he will be fine.

This. Well said that man.

Gatts is still learning the pro game.

His career is in its infancy and if he devolopes could spen 20 years and become a very good county cricketer

He will be fine. He has showed that he is good in the field, and just needs a bit more time to develop as a batsman.

I think last night Wright, Yardy and Goodwin should take more of the blame

Threw it away when Wright got out as we were quite comfortable, it was always going to require sensible batting but unfortunately Luke and to a lesser extent Nash both threw their wickets away as they were feeling tied down.

Ridiculous thread. He is still young and not been playing professional cricket for very long. He has a lot of the attributes needed for the shorter game and I still think he will come good.

i dont think he did too much wrong last night, hes not a big enough hitter by himself, however if he had been partnering 1 of the top order for longer, he might have been able to plod along nicely getting lots of singles/twos and giving the big hitter the majority of the strike.

was more disappointed by goodwin (seemed all over the place) and nash (too slow scoring) at batting than gatting. also to luke wright for throwing it away

Needs to go back to 2nd Ix to work on his game. Evidently he has something, otherwise I can't inmagine Robbo keeping giving him chances. That said, the early signs in the first team have certainly not been encouraging, gets out too cheaply, too often.

AS for his fielding, from what I've seen it's a mixed bag. he can hit the stumps etc, but also seen him butterfingers when fileding near the boundary too often; I think it's probably a concentration thing.

I'd like him to prove me wrong, but I can't help feeling his cricket career will mirror his football career. Clearly talented, but not quite delivering.
