No, it was between unpopular and a complete ********. The ******** was promising to slash taxes all over the place and to hell with the consequences, plus he was quite funny his one liners and his quips. Unpopular had been unpopular for a decade or two, but only narrowly lost the nomination to Obama in 2008. It wasn't unreasonable to have thought that a woman who had worked publically for decades and had been Secretary of State would be elected president. She is arguably the most qualified candidate in modern history up against the least qualified ever, period. But Trump tapped into the bigoted and racist heartland and got the job done, despite not wanting to win and receiving around 2 million fewer votes.

Erm Sim was referring to our government and I was agreeing in referring to our election

i recently read up on how the electoral college actually works as I'd always known it was a complex system but never took the time to understand it. Since reading up on it I have come to the conclusion that Trump will be president in 2021.

He will no doubt lose the populist vote again as the polls suggest but given they way the system works I imagine he will win the electoral vote again and that is all that really matters right now.

I disagree.

Look at the Polls in the States Trump needs to win/hold and he's well behind in most of them (Florida/Ohio/Michigan/Wisconsin etc.)

He won't win in November.

Agree with the OP - Biden is a poor choice - is he really the best the Democrats can come with after 4 years?

I think the main difference this time is that a Trump victory is seen as a credible outcome; last time Clinton was assumed to have an open goal. Anti-trump campaigning by groups such as the Lincoln Project has been ramping up for months now and is really brutal.

I’ve seen quite a few clips of him and there is something wrong with him - cognitively. He struggles to complete sentences and loses his thought process. Also, there are question marks of his treatment/behaviour to women in the past, same as Trump.

I’m no fan of Trump, but maybe we need to question why people voted for him in such large numbers and why his support is still at decent levels. IMO, the problem is with politics/politicians in general and the fact that they are so far removed from the public. Hence why someone like Trump can come in and get elected. It’s not because people like him, it’s because he’s not viewed as part of the establishment.

I thought the same when I saw a Biden speech.

The words were sound and indeed encouraging but his delivery was without any passion or conviction. He was saying the right things but certainly gave the impression that he didn't really believe in what he was saying. It was an extremely odd performance from him.

From what I understand, the majority of people saying they will vote for him is "because he isn't Trump"; not because he has policies attractive to the electorate (if indeed he has any policies at all!)

But the bottom line is that he can't possibly be worse than Trump so I hope he wins. The world will be a slightly safer place without Trump and his lunacy.

He won the working class, blue collar America because of people like you, sneering down your noses at them. Not because he tapped into any latent rascism. I suppose its an easy and convenient excuse for the Democrats and friends though. See if that works in November.

You're partly right. But getting revenge against people accusing you of being racist for supporting Trump is not a logical explanation for the overall outcome. The bit you're overlooking there is that these people started out supporting Trump. Then they were mocked and talked down to. It's the same with Brexit. Yes people got annoyed being paronised and being told they were thick. But they did start out supporting Trump/Brexit. I'm not talking about eveyone who voted Trump/Brexit here, just the ones you think voted Trump because they felt patronised by those mocking them for supporting Trump.

The reason Trump won, and the reason Brexit won was because the other side did not offer a compelling alternative. It is quite hard campaigning in a charismatic and compelling way for 'No Change', admittedly, especially when up against a new voice, promising Sunny Uplands, £350 million a week for the NHS, a wall between America and Mexico and all the other old bollocks that Brexit and Trump offered.

And at the end of the day, if people feel talked down to when told they are tossers for buying into all that old bollocks, so be it. But it is an effect of the situation, not the cause of it. Albeit, if I were a Brexit Trump supporter, I'd probably feel like Das Reich does now: smug, and wallowing in the schadenfreude.

His age has been known for a while

You say that, but it keeps changing. There's something suspicious about that. Sure, it's 77 now, but last year they said it was 76, before that 75. What'll be at Christmas? 78? For goodness sake, pick an age and stick with it! That's what I say.

I really do not understand the comments in this thread. Biden has served the American people for decades, he is well versed in how government should be run and was part of the administration which turned the country around after the financial crash of 2008 and built the prosperous economy Trump inherited and has flushed down the toilet. The choice is very clear and it should be easy for all Americans to realise the options on the table in this election.

I was with you all the way up until 'easy for all AMERICANS'. Granted we have many of our own gammons but the sheep like mentality of their populace in being bought through dis-information is staggering. I think in the US if you don't have a passport and therefore at least a passing interest in global affairs or the impact of your foreign policy you shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Knocking on a bit?

Doesn't say much for the Democratic Party if he's the best man for the job at 78?
He's already said he sees himself as a " One term transitional President."... He's going to try to put right as much as he can but accepts the real work will come from the next President after him.. Kamala Harris.

Biden is a safe "get Trump out" choice from what I can see. He's a known quantity to the voter base, and so far Trump's not been able to land any significant attacks that stick (unlike with Hilary and the "lock her up" chants). Also, so far he's not been able to get things moving with his trademark rallies.

I think, also, that Harris is a brilliant pick for VP. Again, Trump's probably going to struggle to land any attacks that stick. And Harris herself is, I think, far more likely to be able to help get the vote out for Biden than what Hilary's VP choice was able to do for her.

Sadder still, the fact that no Republican had the guts to stand up and offer an alternative to the last three years of bigotry, lies and chaos from Trump.

You’re probably a liberal/socialist. Typical response - “Oh, the people who don’t vote the right way are thick, so they shouldn’t be allowed to vote”. We had the same BS on here over Brexit and that those who voted to leave didn’t understand / racist / xenophobic / old, etc. The lefties can’t tolerate debate without getting personal (note the use of gammon in your post). The self-righteous, sanctimonious bile which socialists like to espouse continually alienates people.

Sounds like he's half a sandwich short of picnic when talking, mispronouncing words etc...... Cant see him lasting 8 years, surprised if he makes 4 with the rigours of the Job, still Anyone but trump, but the VP Harris could well get the top gig, due Bidens age or him losing his marbles.

No, he won the votes of people who believed his lies. Either they were too stupid to see through him, or they just hoped and prayed that he would be successful. Ultimately, if he had been successful then it would have been to the benefit of the whole country. But he's too thin skinned, he's too selfserving and he's too petty. He had his chance he's blown it. Covid-19 isn't his fault, but his appalling lack of leadership is.

I don't blame anyone who voting for Trump. I found him funny in the campaign and his general message was a good one, MAGA sounded great. It didn't mean anything, and there was no substance to it, but it sounded great and considering a Clinton was the alternative it shouldn't have been such a surprise that he won. But 4 years later, he's not made the country great. He has proven himself to be corrupt, uninformed and hopeless. He has nothing positive to offer the country and certainly shouldn't be re-elected.

as i understand it, a lot of the swing states are very much up for grabs. this is why Trump is fighting the mail in vote, fears stay at home voters will make a difference.

Trump turned 7 states in the last election, but 5 of those only very marginally and 4 of those 5 are in the north east. They could very easily swing back the other way. From memory, there was some analysis done after the 2012 election that suggested the reason Hailary lost those states was more to do with a loss of the Dem vote rather than an increase in the Rep vote. I would expect those Dem voters who stayed away from the polling booth last time will not do so again.

He wouldn’t have a hope in hell if the opposition was anyone else, but the bar has been set so low, he might have a chance. He just needs to hide himself away, not make any public appearances or say a thing, and he might just do it.

Just been reading that Biden's most recent speech has been praised (genuinely, not sarcastically) by presenters at Fox. That's significant, especially as so far Trump's attack line against Biden continues to be one that just won't stick (claiming he's a puppet for the far left).

Over the past few months, Fox do seem to have been very slowly making a pivot away from Trump, in readiness for a new narrative if he loses in November.
