FINALLY closed in Balham, the pub that time forgot.

I've been in the newer ones, but this one was in a time warp.

Spoons? Nah. The Royal George by Holmbush.
Every day they do an all you can eat breakfast buffet for 4.99 and it’s good quality grub too. For an extra 1.99 you get hot drink bottomless cup . From 8am every day.
Staff are friendly. Place is surprisingly cosy and not too busy. I shall be there tomorrow, bright and early.

I don’t mind Spoons so much but I’d never drink in one although they do good enough food I simply don’t wish to give my money to that Brexit supporting bellend.

I think both sides can surely agree he’s a gobshite and a hypocrite. But yeah, Brexit bellend as well.

Although I have abandoned my principles for a full English before a walk from Littlehampton to Anrundel. I’ll do most things for a plate of bacon and eggs and a bottomless cup of breakfast tea.

Fair enough. It's the GENERIC sneering at 'Spoons I find distasteful.

Always find there cask ales are very good and at a modest price.. I drink in one before a home match now and then get a bus to the stadium. Fed up with the queues at Brighton station. Shame because i like the Battle of Trafalgar pub

I find much of the 'Spoons Sneerfest laughable, and based on nothing more than abject snobbery. Don't really get the resentment at being able to drink a bottle of imported Asian beer or a can of the latest Craft darling at the price it probably should have been pitched at in the first place. Guess it all comes down to a snotty resentment of the people you are forced to rub shoulders with in a 'Spoons. Which is in the main your normal average person, much like you'd encounter and quite rightly not even notice at football. Word with yourselves? ???

Give me some down to earth ruffians from Spoons to talk to then some manbag wearing Iphone gimps drinking Brewdog stuff elsewhere.

As always and rather sadly there are way too many well documented socialist types on herr choosing snobbery over substance which for me says more about them than the pub chain!

Which one?

Lived in Sheffield for 3 years and found the Bankers Draft to be ok. The one on West Street was an absolute hovel. The Water Works was ok as well I guess (but never been in sober).

The worst i've ever been in is the one on George Street in Hove. But they are cracking value and can't complain.
Only a year late.... Sorry.

I'm on about the one at Woodseats which is perfectly nice, round the corner from my house and has a decent clientele.

Of the three that you mention, The Water Works on Division Street is decent, the West Street one has always been a dump and The Bankers Draft is now the worst of the lot! An absolute dive, full of the lowest forms of life in town.

I think it's because all the proper old skool, rough arse boozers round there (in which, let's face it, is the scummiest part of the city centre) were closed down. It didn't used to be that bad but now it's the place to avoid.

My reviews are all based on popping in for a swift pint or two of an afternoon too.

I don't want to imagine what The Bankers Draft is like at night..... [emoji23]

I use the ones at Gatwick and Heathrow. The breakfasts, with black pudding, are decent and the ales are good. Pie and chips is okay, bangers and mash not so.

There’s a big one near me which, whilst having its fair share of drunkards, also does loads of social events, has several football teams and, rightly, no music.

Grub’s fine, bar staff friendly. It’s all down to the Manager how well a pub runs.

Balham has moved on these days

It's a real shame that old pubs are closing. The Brewery's are happy to cash in on the buildings these days. It's not ethical but that is the society we live in now. Not my beliefs but what can you we do unless we all come together and form community pubs which take a lot of hard work and time. Wish I did have the time though.
Wetherspoons has a place. It's not perfect but for the older people the prices are reasonable and it's a place for them to meet up. A refillable coffee for £1.50 is a bargain and for the breakfast can't be beaten for the price. There would be a lot less pubs if it wasn't for the Spoons.

Do you normally wander into pubs and start talking to strangers then?

Had a lunchtime drink/snack with mrs v in the Worthing Slug and Lettuce a couple of weeks back and it was passable, draught beer choice was either Tribute or London Pride. It was okish but could not help spotting a few Worthing " faces" having a morning lifter.

It certainly works for me but I'm quite surprised that younger people don't get reasonable prices as well.
