Isn't that the whole point ..... socialise in a public house?

With complete randoms? I can’t say I usually do myself.

It certainly works for me but I'm quite surprised that younger people don't get reasonable prices as well.

I’m sure they do, just not at Whetherspoons.

One opening near-ish to my office in May (allegedly, they bought the buildings two years ago but are working through a few other projects in the city).

Unlikely to use it often but looking forward to the impact on the other boozers prices. A brewery-owned pub I quite like that's nearer, does cask, does similar food but better quality etc has been ratcheting its prices up at a phenomenal rate, pint of their IPA was €4.50 about five years ago and is now €6.50 with no change in taxation. They will absolutely lose some custom and will need to react.

As always and rather sadly there are way too many well documented socialist types on herr choosing snobbery over substance which for me says more about them than the pub chain!

As usual you wade in and get it wrong. Some people would rather go to a good, honest , reasonably priced local and not a soulless chain pub. I’ll drink in a Spoons but certainly way down my list of choices. In my local I can get a pint of IPA for £2.49 and a meal for a fiver. In my favourite pub I can get an IPA for 3.20 and they don’t do food which I like as it keeps the families out. So I’m served quite well enough without having to go into a Spoons on a regular basis. Not that we have a Spoons where I live , earstvone is a bus ride away and I haven’t been to it for about 7 years .
I’m currently in the Royal George having an all you can eat brekkie for a fiver so I’m hardly adversed to a cheapie venue.
I don’t like the guy that owns Wetherspoons and I find them largely unpleasant. But I’ll go in from time to time. They’re alright but I can’t get enthusiastic about them or have them down as first choice.

Do you normally wander into pubs and start talking to strangers then?

Ahhh! He’s the ol’ Glasgow Creeper.

When you walk into a seemingly empty pub and as soon as you’ve ordered your pint and turn to choose a seat , from out of nowhere the pub bore has snuck up beside you . The ol’ Glasgow Creeper.

Poo bacteria found in ice at Wetherspoon, Slug and Lettuce, Harvester and other pubs.

Featuring on BBC Watchdog tonight.

Harvester doesn't suprise me. I used to work at the Patcham one when it first opened. The hygiene was horrific. To the point that they were forced by the council inspectors to throw away fridges full of chicken because it hadn't been stored properly. The 'chefs' weren't trained, they followed instruction cards. Awful place to eat - never eaten in one since I worked in one.

And before anyone thinks 'oh well it's Miller and Carter now' - same company !!!!

Oh blimey!
The Miller and Carter near us, took over an old Beefeater pub.
My Mrs was a chef with BT for years, and had all the hygiene training going, but always said that if you wanted to know the cleanliness of a restaurant, check out their conveniences.
It's bloody true most times, although the Ritz may some right old minging crappers (allegedly)

No. It was on a Sunday afternoon in the best "everyone's been out all weekend" pub in Sheffield at the time.

Ha ha. I think you can be excused talking to randoms under these circumstances....it’s the territory which goes with such Sundays.

It always amuses me that people wont use JDW because of giving their money to Tim Martin, althoughg he is only a shareholder now, but will use the many chains owned by M & B and contribute money to Spurs largest shareholder, well he was not sure if Joe Lewis still is.
